Cally crime…….

Crime_callyOh dear, here we go again – Sunday 11th March 0230 a group of males was assaulted receiving serious head injuries at this site in an unprovoked attack.  This is outside the newsagent near Iceland on the Bemerton side of the Cally – if you know anything call the police on 020 7421 0185.  I wonder if the super-dooper CCTV camera 40 yards away was pointing in this direction.

Lost House, Crinan Street

Living2_big I am indebted to the Charkblog for drawing my attention to this (Richard Charkin does a model leadership blog thingy for Macmillan).  An extraordinary property is up for sale in the heart of Kings Cross for a mere £2.8m, the completely hidden ‘Lost House’ on Crinan Street.  Quite an extraordinary piece of work, words fail to do it justice really, although ”bond villan’ springs to mind.  But its all a matter of taste.  Only those with white cat need apply……

Kings Cross Street environment issues

York_way_near_old_school I did one of my regular walks at the weekend in Kings Cross and reported a range of street environment issues.  Contact Islington (who are now getting better at handling email it seems sent the response below.  Street problem fetishists can see pictures at this link.

On a related point, the Islington West Area Committee last night took a report on neighbourhood management in North Kings Cross.  The current expensive and highly disputed arrangements are being replaced.  While this happens i was able to secure agreement that admin support for the North Kings Cross Environmental Task Group continues.  This is a silly name for a couple of residents who sit down with a range of agencies who are responsible for street issues (housing environment, parks, bins, ICSL etc) and thrash out solutions to tricky local problems.  It works and I am pleased that the Council will continue to support it.

Stalled in its tracks………

Kings_cross_station_3 A late night update – the community put on a good show at the Camden planning meeting this evening – covering community impact, heritage and procedure in a variety of styles and means.  We succeeded in diverting discussion almost exclusively onto the Eastern Access issue.  Councillors were clearly very concerned at the impact on the community and puzzled as to how we had been so badly handled.  However, the meeting ran out of time at 1030 thanks to a poorly constructed agenda that had a multi hundred million pound development on at item 12.  Camden are now fixing a special meeting to hear the application in more depth.

This is good news.  It gives us more time to develop our arguments after an initial test.  I was impressed by how much Councillors from all parties were prepared to listen.  Network Rail must have been dismayed.  You could feel the odds slipping for them in the room – NR now have to do some probability analysis and work out how much of the multi hundred million budget they are prepared to gamble for the sake of a footbridge, a subway, anything to get in from the North and East.  We would all be happy to cut a sensible deal.

Thanks so much to everyone who has slogged away to get here – it’s been wonderful to see a community of residents, workers and businesses come together.  We don’t have the resources of Network Rail but right is on our side.  We fight another day.  Will update further when we get a date for the next meeting – likely to be w/c 16th April……

UPDATE – SEE THE COMMITTEE ON TV !

I am pleasantly surprised to find that the meeting was web cast and (with a bit of clicking) you can watch it by clicking here and following these instructions.  Click the bit in the middle of the screen called ‘Index Points’ and a list should come up – scroll down to Item 12 ‘Planning Matters Kings Cross Team’ and you can watch the whole Kings Cross debate.  The planning officers’ presentation is not v exciting but it was when the Councillors started intervening almost exclusively on the Eastern Access (just click on their names – the video doesn’t work perfectly but you usually get the drift) that we thought we were onto something…….

If you want to see the three people who spoke for community interests click on ‘Deputation’.

Kings Cross access – bad news as decision looms

Kingscrossaccess Network Rail has now said that they do intend to close the access to Kings Cross station from the North and the East – sawing a community in half.  Following our meeting Network Rail propose some palliative measures  Download letter_to_paul_convery_mar_07.pdf (work to make York Way safe to walk down) but from July this year 150 years of entering the station from the North will end.  This is a terrible result for the thousands of people who live and work here.

Camden Council have to approve this as part of the wider plans for refurbishing Kings Cross.  The decision will be taken at a meeting on Thursday at Camden Town Hall (details here Item 12- thanks to Phil Jeffries).  So we are working up some lobbying plans – our MP Emily Thornberry and Councillor Paul Convery are behind us.  I should be amazed if a Council could approve plans to:

  • reduce pedestrian access to a modern transport hub
  • cut a community in two
  • make commuting less safe for women
  • kick a community in the teeth just as it is beginning to recover

We need to ensure that the Council does not feel pressured by bogus Olympic time scales.  A couple of months now to think these crazy plans through prevent decades of problems.  Will update in next day or so.

Tudorvale noise at St William’s Yard

All still very up and down with the Tudorvale construction site at St William’s Yard on Gifford Street.  No work on Saturday which is good but a lot of overruns, noise and a hardening attitude towards residents who continue to stick up for themselves.  The Council noise protection people are fully engaged. For reference readers can click here for the Council Code of Construction Practice of which Tudorvale seem to be in breach.  As usual at the end of the day today the Tudorvale sub contractors were rushing to pour concrete after six o’clock and i caught it on film – the noise goes on like this more or less all day.

The bells, the bells……….

Ladykillers1 Rufford street regularly echoes to the noise of bells, an alarm bell ringing loudly for thirty seconds.  At night, when all else is quiet the bell is audible inside houses.  Stuart Cottis has spent months tracking down who is responsible for the noise.  Network Rail has a train warning bell at the exit to the Gasworks Tunnels from Kings Cross station that emerge into the Cally Cutting (where the Ladykillers train sequences were shot).  After months of patient lobbying Stuart has received the following disappointing response:

‘Bell at Gasworks Tunnel

I write further to your e-mails to Janet Goodland and Derek Crook and refer directly to your recent email requesting an update on the train operated warning system at Gasworks Tunnel.  Foremost, please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you whilst we have investigated the issues raised in your e-mail.

In my last letter to you, I mentioned that the Network Rail Operations Manager would have a discussion with engineers about the possibility of replacing this system (which has been in situ since the 1970’s) with a modern warning system if this would lead to a reduction in noise levels. I am sorry to advise that after considerable time spent investigating the options available, it has been decided that a change is not feasible as a new system will also be audible at the same level as that of the system currently in place.

As previously advised, this system is required due to the limited sighting distance for drivers and the amount of train movements at this location. Without this important train operated warning system, all trains out of Kings Cross would have to be cautioned in order to protect staff at the tunnel.  This would have major safety implications as well as a significant impact on train performance and journey times for the millions of passengers using the line.

I am sorry that this is not the answer that you were hoping for, however our priority must be the safety of both our workers and the travelling public. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

Denise Thompson
Network Rail
Community Relations Manager LNE’

Personally, I don’t understand the risk assessment here – just how often are there staff in the tunnel?  Why can’t there be a system that staff can turn on before they enter the tunnel to work and turn off again when they leave?  All it would take would be a switch – can any railway buffs out there help ?  Mrs Wilberforce would be most disappointed.
