Squirrel sandwich………

Squirrel_bagette_2 Click on the photo to see why the squirrels in Bingfield Park have left my bird feeders alone – they now go to Bun in the Oven bakery on the Cally Road and buy baguettes for sandwiches (click picture to enlarge).  I  really don’t know where he got this from but he scooted up the tree with it after a fight with the pigeons.  Has anyone seen Tufty in Iceland buying fish paste?  Or, i guess Nutella.  If you want to see the film of the squirrel raiding the feeder again click here

They have largely left the feeders alone now but i only get a pair of blue tits and a pair of great tits.  The chaffinches have gone.  Any suggestions on how to improve bird life in the park more than welcome.

Kings Cross street issues 14 March

Tipping_36_balfeAn early morning wander around the neighbourhood revealed the following problems that I am reporting to Contact Islington.  Pictures are in a photo album here:

Let’s hope they get sorted out.  Contact Islington did well with the set of issues i reported here a week or so ago.

Harringtons Fresh, Wicklow Street – new cafe

Harringtons_1 Lisa Tang has reported a new, apparently upmarket cafe in the area Harringtons Fresh (click for website) on Wicklow Street just off the Grays Inn Road round the back of St Chad’s place (map). It looks very promising with a French inspired menu and Alex there is offering 10% off to anyone who cites this website before Easter.  They also do corporate catering.  If you try it let us know through the site.

Restaurants at Regent’s Quarter

Cantaloupe1Where are they you say!  Well I’ve just heard from a reliable source, (my neighbour Helen P.) who works in real estate that Cantaloupe Group has taken 6,500 sq.ft of space at Regent Quarter.  They are the first leisure/restaurant operator to sign.

We don’t know specifically what they have planned as they seem to have a mix of different venues, however they seem heavily geared to liquor!!!

I would suggest that we all be on the lookout for those licensing applications that are bound to start appearing in the complex.  Food with drink is A-ok, but I for one would hate to see this place become an extension of the bar scene of Upper Street.

CCTV on Bridgeman Road

Clip_image002 For some time, folks have been frustrated about the delays associated with the long-awaited CCTV installation at Bridgman and Caledonian Roads.

Please note the following from PC Mark Warwick of our Safer Neighbourhood’s Team.

Just to let you all know the CCTV is up and running in Bridgeman Road and Carel and I had our first arrest as a result of its presence. A male was arrested for a Criminal Offence ( Sorry – I can’t be more specific at this point) . This  arrest was also in Conjunction with our colleagues from the LBI Park’s Patrols and "Duke" the dog who played his part very effectively.

Its a good start …. Lets see where it takes us !

Thanks to Mark and the Team for their continued efforts on behalf of our neighbourhood…

If any of you wish to be notified about the work of the Safer Neighbourhood Panel (the residents group that meets regularily with our Safer Neighbourhoods Police Team), please contact Jennifer the Panel’s secretary (and local resident) and request to be added to the mailing list.  Of special note is that this Panel is Chaired by our local Councillor Paul Convery, so this is a real opportunity to channel your views about how to improve safety in our neighbourhood directly to someone who has the influence to take matters further!

Local crime coverage

Adams The blanket coverage of Terry Adams conviction and sentencing has led to plenty of TV coverage for the area.  The Adams family grew up on the Barnsbury Estate, East of the Cally Road and South of Copenhagen Street built in the 1930s and 1950s (only Sky seemed to find it – i can’t quite get the circle on the map in the right place – the BBC was helplessly filming in front of some Georgian terraces).

The coverage has been disappointingly glorifying, making comparisons to Lock, Stock etc.  One angle the media miss is the tragic role model that the Adams and other organised criminals provide to young people.  Seen from one perspective, such criminals are people who have fought hard to escape local poverty, poor housing and lack of local opportunity.  If you have no other models turning to crime seems less illegitimate.

Local youth workers frequently mention this as an important influence on young people’s behaviour when they start to go down the wrong path.  This makes the problems in Kings Cross harder to tackle.  Despite that though imaginative and targeted youth work has made a big impact in the area in the past few years.  I am on the board of the Copenhagen Youth Project – who really impress will post some more on them shortly.

Noise, noise, noise – St Williams Yard shakes up neighbourhood

Williamsplace_1The St William’s Yard building site at Gifford and Pembroke Streets continues to be badly supervised and wreak havoc with local residential amenity.  Work runs over agreed hours, workers behave in an unsafe way, the streets are full of mud and concrete, the lorries drive too fast down Bingfield Street and the noise and vibration are driving residents mad.  Diana Shelley and Cllr Convery are both in the fray.  Tudorvale the developers are communicating but not much seems to be changing on the ground.  Hopefully the Council will crack down.  If anyone needs to communicate with Tudorvale pls email  Martyn Chandler who is fending residents off.

Also try the hilarious St William’s Yard website they have here which seems to forget to mention the difficult social problems faced by the neighbourhood into which these developers are trying to sell an Islington Upper Street lifestyle concept.

Soho Original Books receives license renewal to operate a Licensed Sex Shop – UNDER EXISTING CONDITIONS

Soho_books_shopfront While this announcement may not seem like a victory for the local community – it actually is!

Since 2000 a Licensed Sex Shop has operated within the premises at 9 Caledonian Road, first as the King’s Cross Prowler, and more currently as Soho Original Books.  Of course, hardly anyone knew this because of the Conditions that the Council placed on the shop’s original License – there could be nothing in the window that promoted the adult materials that were available inside.  This simple but powerful Condition made this shopfront part of the normal fabric of the neighbourhood and effectively eliminated the negative connotations that would have existed if it was not in place.  In fact, some folks even commented that the shop front at 9 Caledonian Road was one of the most attractive on the block.

However, all this might have changed for the worst because at the latest license renewal, the owner of the shop sought to have these critical Conditions removed from his License so that he could hang a large red neon sign in the window promoting the true nature of what was on offer inside.

Fortunately members of the community spotted this and alerted our Councillor Paul Convery who with a number of other local residents wrote in to object and eventually succeeded in preventing any changes to the License.  A face-to-face meeting was held with the Applicant and as a result of the amount of local objection, the shop owner decided that it was in his best long-term interest to remove his request to eliminate the Conditions of the license and to simply seek another renewal as he had done in the past.  More importantly though, he realized that given the changes taking place in the neighbourhood, his location might be better suited to a restaurant plan that he is now considering.

While I believe this is a victory for the neighbourhood, I know that there are members of the community who feel that all sex shops should simply be outlawed.  While I may agree in principal, I don’t feel that this is a practical approach as they are not illegal.  Wheras now that King’s Cross has one licensed sex shop I believe we can make a legitmate case to reject any others.

Also as a result of local residents lobbying on this subject we have received a firm commitment from Trading Standards to make a concerted effort to put as much legal pressure as possible on the two remaining unlicensed shops in the area.  Hopefully it will only be a matter of time before they close down as others in the area have already done.

Lastly as a further a result of the actions of Councillor Convery and some of the other 30 local residents who made written representations on this matter, the Council is now modifying the way local people are notified about these license applications and renewals in the future to ensure more local folks have a better chance on commenting on these matters.

Thanks to all who got involved and carried the day!
