Kings Cross Access – vital public meeting next Thursday 19th April

Kings_cross_station_3 This summer, the entrances to Kings Cross on York Way will close  for ever unless the community can stop it at a meeting on Thursday 19th April at 1900 in Camden Town Hall opposite St Pancras.  Everyone can do their bit – turning up and sitting in the large public gallery will help show Councillors how much the Community cares.  We were on the verge of a breakthrough previously when the meeting ran out of time.   I am grateful for the avalanche of legal, planning and engineering advice that has followed the last meeting and has further strengthened our case.  Readers interested in the history of this issue can find more here.

I have twice offered Network Rail the opportunity for talks to come up with an compromise.  But they have not responded and seem prepared to gamble a £350m development for the sake of a simple access solution at Wharfdale Road.  If Network Rail is reading this, you have my details.

I am grateful to Phil Jeffries for sending the following, which helps clear up confusion about how the meeting will work.

Camden’s DC Committee will resume its consideration of three King’s Cross issues on Thursday 19th April. The Council has just published the following on its website:

“A special meeting of the Committee is scheduled to be held on Thursday, 19th April 2007 at 7.00 p.m. in the Council Chamber to continue the consideration of the items which were partially considered at the meeting on 22nd March 2007.

“Agendas and reports for this meeting will be available from 5:00 p.m. onwards on Wednesday 11th April 2007 at http://www.camden.gov.uk/democracy or by contacting Richard Cutbush in Committee Services, tel: 020 7974 6065 or dc@camden.gov.uk.  Please note that the reports will be those relating to the King’s Cross development which were previously published on the agenda for the meeting of 22nd March 2007.”

The clerks have already told us that:

“The new meeting with the same councillors as heard the initial consideration of the six applications will begin from the point at which the previous meeting finished. As normal practice there will be no new or repeated deputations heard at this meeting, those heard previously will be taken into account by councillors in deciding on the applications. The councillors already have a full report on the range of local people’s views and the results of negotiations with the developers whereby the proposed scheme has been revised to reflect many of these views, plus the supplementary papers that include the submissions from deputations made."

Pho – Vietnamese takeway and delivery

Vietnamflag Kings Cross Road is an unlikely setting for a very good Vietnamese restaurant and takeaway but Pho proves that the re-surgence of the area continues.  I had lunch there yesterday – the pho was excellent. A couple of readers have now recommended it and even Fay Maschler has reviewed Pho in the Standard (quote).

It was very good, a pho to measure against the soups that more sophisticated restaurants supply. The tripe had drifted into innocuous strands more interesting for texture than taste.

Other dishes that beguiled my young friend and pleased Reg and me were the neatly packed summer rolls wrapped in rice pepper with prawns bulging pinkly against the sides; an excellent papaya salad, here £5 as against Suka’s £11; two soft-shell crabs for £6.50; the house special of vermicelli noodles with delicious peppery grilled beef slices, prawns, and deep-fried, dimpled Vietnamese spring rolls served with vermicelli noodles and salad. Forays into the Chinese menu were not a great success and probably shouldn’t be bothered with.

Pho @ King’s Cross is a simple set-up with bare wooden tables, hard seats and ceiling spotlights that bore into your head. Customers, who last week included families with young children and students, came and went quickly

The takeaway menu is here (and they deliver – including pho itself i have visions of moped delivery guys with a yoke and a bucket of pho on each end).  You can find Pho at 126 Kings Cross Road, just after the church on the left as you go downhill. Telephone 020 7833 9088.

Maps and pictures

Canada_largest_easter_egg Over Easter I’ve been experimenting with some new stuff.  Some of you will see a map on the middle left hand side of this page.  The map shows places to eat and drink in Kings Cross as well as the odd food shop.  This is in response to the interest in food and drink posts on this site.  I try to cover local businesses that residents recommend rather than the chains etc – they can look after themselves.  Some people in big companies behind firewalls won’t be able to see the map i am afraid which uses java and is blocked by many security conscious companies.

I am still fiddling with the map technology from Platial – which is a bit temperamental.  Let me know what you think – all suggestions welcome, including for additions (but not Starbucks pls unless you are the manager and want to make a huge charity donation to a local cause)

Also I am indebted to who Hugh Blackbourn alerted me to the wonderful pool of over 300 Kings Cross photos on Flikr (which are much more cheerful than my shots of graffiti and trash).  Will try and get a feed of the photos into this blog as they are published if i can get the technology to work

Allez les bleus………..

RandellsNothing too remarkable about this sunset photo – except for the lack of the huge blue containers that have blighted the neighbourhood for the last four months.  The last three have been removed from Randell’s Road – that set were particularly dangerous as they force the Cemex lorries into the middle of the road and created a blind corner for cyclists and others.  See here and here and some more here for the saga.

Thanks to Paul and Stuart in particular for banging on about it and not letting the Coucil forget.

Gifford st generation game…..

Genny3 Another chilly night looms for resident of Gifford St, the Bemerton estate and the West of the Cally road as a massive power outage hits the area.  A high voltage cable has burned out, probably in Cally Road on Friday night and the area to the West of the Cally as far as Gifford St has been without power for up to 36 hours.

EdF (contact details here) has shipped in some big generators which they plug into the sub-stations.  But there is a generation game going on as the one they dropped on Pembroke St for Gifford and the North Bemerton ran out of diesel, causing angry scenes on the pavement.  It is also doubtful whether they have enough generation capacity.  In the meantime Cally road is being dug up to find the cable.  I can post this because Rufford St runs off a different substation on Randells Road – which had its high voltage cables replaced recently and York Way dug up for some time.

Genny The police are no doubt looking forward to a night on the estates with no power for door entry/closure systems or TVs……

Regents Canal – islands in the stream……..

Floating_islands No not a Dolly Parton special for Kings Cross but a lovely proposal for a hundred and fifty metres of floating nature islands in Regents Canal to encourage flora, fish and fowl and break up a little the industrial lines.  Click the picture to enlarge and get a better idea.  There is a consultation document here Download floating_island_consult1.doc to put your views in.  Thanks to Lisa Tang for alerting.

More street issues……

308_cally_tipping The Council graffiti team are doing well at the minute – they have cleaned up some persistent tags in the neighbourhood, so I have done a round up in North Kings Cross and reported more – see pictures at this link. If you have things to report please email Contact Islington by clicking here.

Have also reported a typical set of street problems spotted on a walk this Saturday – see pics at this link.  When I first started doing this in 2002 I would have about 15-20 things to report on the average weekend and getting them actioned was very erratic.  Now it is down to 5-10 and I would say about 80% get fixed – would be interested in others’ observations about progress in recent years.  I am struck by the near disappearance of abandoned cars.

(BTW its amazing how popular a load of old rubbish can be – some of the photo collections of street problems have been viewed over 200 times !)

Kings Cross access – final meeting 19th April

Kings_cross_station_3The meeting to conclude the debate on the Kings Cross application will be on Thursday 19th April, probably in the evening at 1900 and presumably in the usual place, Camden Town Hall opposite St Pancras Station.  This is the crunch meeting to decide whether to accept or reject Network Rail’s plans.  Put it in your diaries – there is a large public gallery and it will be entertaining to see Councillors lay into Network Rail’s plans as they did last time.  (Thanks to the many of you who forwarded Angela Ryans email to me).  More details as they arrive.

Thanks also for the many many offers of help and assistance that have poured into my inbox and helped me strengthen our case substantially.  I didn’t know there were so many planning experts out there.  Any further suggestions pls mail me here.

I have offered Network Rail a meeting but haven’t heard back from them yet.  I also spoke with DfT who are NR’s paymasters – they didn’t seem to be up to speed with the seriousness of the situation for Network Rail who face losing the application all for the sake of access solutions on the East side.
