Kings Cross Railway Lands – the campaign goes on

Kxrlg The doughty team at the Kings Cross Railway Lands Group have won a small victory on their route to a judicial review of the redevelopment plans for the area behind Kings Cross.  The judicial review itself will be on 24th/25th May.  Their press notice says:

‘King’s Cross campaigners celebrated a victory on 24th April when developers, Argent, withdrew their appeal against an injunction preventing demolition of listed and conservation area buildings.

‘Just hours before Mr Justice Sullivan was due to hear the appeal in the High Court, Leigh Day and Co, solicitors for the King’s Cross Railway Lands Group, agreed a deal with the developers, Argent. In return for withdrawing their appeal against the injunction, Argent will be able to carry out minor internal demolition to Stanley Buildings North, beside St Pancras station. In addition, they have signed an undertaking to reinstate any damage to the building if the campaigners’ judicial review of Camden’s planning consent for the £2bn development succeeds.’

Cross Kings new comedy The B-Team Sunday evening

Crosskings People are now starting to see The Cross Kings as a good thing in the neighbourhood,  miles better than the Backpacker, even though they do occasionally have trouble controlling the noise. The food is pretty good for the price and the atmosphere very laid back and alternative.  We can be certain that when the Guardian moves in on York Way, you won’t be able to get in the door.  So get it while it’s good.  There’s some new comedy on Sunday evening 6:30, £3 a head.

The blurb says:

B-Team – 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed
The B-Team is a new, ambitious comedy group who are looking to shake-up the concept of sketch comedy, and your average comedy night. They have already performed in several successful shows in North London, but have their sights set on big things.

Comprised of 5 talented actors, comedians, writers and musicians, they perform fast paced, character based comedy, fused with elements of cabaret, stand-up, variety, live music and they strive to achieve a blend of wit, absurdity, originality and professionalism – with just a hint of irreverence. Their objective : to provide their audience with a great and memorable night out.

Naughty squirrel returns to Bingfield Park

I have put out some bird feeders in Bingfield Park to encourage some wildlife.  There are three squirrels that occasionally raid the bird feeders (see here).  I even saw one up a tree with a baguette it had stolen.I put up a hanging table on a two metre line hoping the squirrel wouldn’t clamber down it.  Anyway – see the film by clicking below or going here.  I might have to buy one of these….

UPDATE
The squirrel has obviously been to an internet cafe on the Cally Road, seen itself on film, not liked it and wrought revenge.  This morning mr squirrel had gnawed through the triple core telephone wire securing the bird table to the tree and the table was on the floor.  In a possibly misguided escalation i have rehung the now battered bird table using garden wire – which is tougher.  Next time will get squirrel to sign a video release form to see if that calms him down.

Kings Cross Access – community gets up to a million quid but no bridge yet……

Kings_cross_station_3 After a surreal Camden Council meeting where residents weren’t allowed to speak, we now have up to £1 million on the table for refurbishing York Way to make it a better pedestrian environment. It is very unusual indeed to get such a commitment from Network Rail.  This came directly from the community campaign so well done everyone.  Huge thanks to everyone who came to the meeting you could see that it influenced the Councillors.

But there is still more work to do.  Network Rail at the eleventh hour, accepted the community need for access to the station from the North East.  This now leads to downstream action in the Section 106 agreement to lock Network Rail into some community benefits.  The Network Rail letter is here.Download Network_Rail_Letter_to_Camden.pdf

What we don’t have and need to continue campaigning for:

Access to the station on the East side.  Network Rail are doing a feasibility study into bridge options.  They say in their letter:

‘we will commit to further pursue the creation of a bridge if in our view a practical, cost-effective and affordable solution emerges from the study’

Camden Councillors got themselves very confused about this – so we need to continue to
lobby hard to make sure a community voice is heard.  My pictures showing earlier bridges were disallowed at the meeting.

Timings for the refurbishment of York Way – the community needs this to happen to ameliorate the effects of loss of access at the North East BEFORE that entrance closes. Again, we need to lobby hard for this as the Section 106 agreement progresses. The new CLG manual for streets will help

Timings of the closure of the Wharfdale Road entrance.  This is due to close to support building works above platform one this summer (there are some offices there being refurbished).  I don’t think this closure is necessary.  Network Rail agreed (with me and Stephan Schulte) to look at how this can be delayed or re-planned to reflect community views.

We have two major levers now – the negotiation of the Section 106 agreement that binds Network Rail into the community enhancements.  And the dreadful muddle Network Rail and Camden have got themselves into about the need for separate permission for a new railway to feed trains to Platform Y.  This could give us grounds for a Judicial Review of the Camden decision.  As well as some potential good will from Network Rail – even though we don’t see eye to eye they have been courteous to deal with.

Huge thanks to everyone who has pitched in with argument and advice – too many to mention all but especially Stephan, Sophie, Paul, Phil, Diana, Lisa, Matthew.

Kings Cross Access – vital Council meeting Thursday 19th 1900 Camden Town Hall opposite St Pancras please come along to support our cause

Kings_cross_station_3Network Rail want to close the access to Kings Cross station from York Way.  They need permission from Camden Councillors at a meeting tomorrow (Thursday 1900 Camden Town Hall opposite St Pancras entrance on Judd Street – Development Control Committee).  There is a public gallery in large and architecturally interesting Council Chamber (virtual tour here).  A good turn out of residents shows Councillors that people care far better than any speech or paper.  Please come along and lend support, it’s better than East Enders.  Just turn up and the people on reception will direct you – you can even bring a sandwich.  See you there.

Kings Cross street environment issues

Tilloch_skip A weekend walk around the area revealed another set of problems reported to Contact Islington.   The Council’s performance has improved a fair bit recently – the graffiti cleaning people are doing a particularly good job at the minute.  The picture shows the abuse of TIlloch Street again – it used to be an awful dumping zone and I spent six months chasing and worrying to get the street tidied up and new locking bollards installed.  But the mystery skip dumper is back again having found a way to unlock the bollards.  You can see pictures of other issues here.

Kings Cross mushrooms……

MushroombookLocal produce is very fashionable at the minute – the very good Konstam in Kings Cross tries to source everything from within the M25.  So I thought I would source my own mushrooms and finally got around to working through my mushroom book recycling kit  – and am delighted with the results (click the photo to make it bigger).    If the Salvation Army shop on Upper Stret has to close I might need to recycle loads of books this way. You can buy a kit here they make a great present – pick any old paperback, soak it in water sprinkle the spores in and follow the instructions.  Three weeks later you have great oyster mushrooms.

Off now to chop them and saute in butter to have on toast.  If I can get a grazing permit for Bingfield Park we could get a whole  local produce thing going…..
