Getting on top of Treaty Street tipping

Dsc00947The area around the electricity substation on Treaty Street has long been a black hole for tipping – ownership of the land is unclear so is responsibility for cleaning it.  See  here for past tipping problems.  The spot is right next to a school too.  Working through the network set up by the North Kings Cross Environmental Taskgroup Chris Demetriou at ICSL has helped to resolve the situation working with the school- the picture shows it looking nice and clean.  And here is a ‘before’ shot.

Well done, let’s hope it stays this way.  Chris’s email is below.

Please could you ensure that area around the electricity substation in Treaty Street is swept to a high standard on Tuesday. Governor Stevens at the Copenhagen Primary School will ask his Premises Manager to keep the area clean thereafter, I will also ask our Clean Team to regularly maintain the area. SEO’s will also monitor the dumping in the area.
If possible I would also appreciate your teams assistance in maintain the area on an ad-hoc basis.
Please see attached photographs of the area in it’s present state.
Thank you
Chris

Cally This and Caledonian That

Calwines I stumbled across a good website with some pictures of shops on the Caledonian Road called Caledonian or Cally.  It makes a surprisingly nice set.  You can find the pics here by Tom Carden .  Off camping for a few days so this site will be quiet but can still be emailed.

WARNING car crime outbreak rufford street

There has been very little car crime on Rufford Street in the last year or two.  But in the last three days two cars have had glass smashed – not for theft as nothing was taken – but simply vandalism.  The nearest clue we have is that it was a couple of boys about 5 feet tall aged about 10-12, one white with blond short hair, the other of mixed ethnic origin in a blue ‘Leeds’ tracksuit.

This sounds like summer holiday recreational vandalism, rather than a return to the large scale systematic thieving of 2002/3.  If everyone could keep their eyes open that would be great and contact the police on 999 if you see a crime in progress or someone running away or by email at this address if you have a description to feed to the local neighbourhood police team.  If you have some information and are uncomfortable about passing it to the police yourself please contact me through this website in confidence.

Rats, York Way by York Way Court shops

Rat_1A neighbour has reported seeing rats twice in the past week or so scurrying amongst the flowerbeds in front of the shops on York Way between the Backpacker pub and Copenhagen Street.  Rats are a fact of life in London but it is unusual to see them on the surface near busy areas.  I shall report these and see what happens.

UPDATE

with some rapidity the Council has go in touch see paste:

>>>Thank you for your recent report regarding rats in the flower beds in York way.  I will ask one of our pest control officers to visit the area.

Regards

Terence O’Leary
Pest and Animal Welfare Services Manager

Caledonian Kebab review

Menupicl The Caledonian Road area has a diverse mix of restaurants.  But i was surprised to stumble across this rather good review of Caledonian Kebab at 355 Caledonian Road (scroll down a bit on the page or find Caledonian).   A surprisingly handy website, if you like kebabs.

Vandal-proof light vandalised, Bemerton Estate, Stranraer Way

Light_bemertonPeople with long memeories will recall that the walk-through into the Bemerton Estate off Carnoustie Drive next to the Under-Fives Centre opposite Freeling Street used to be full of bored/hanging about/intimidating local youths.  They would smash the old lights and lurk in the dark.  The Council did a good job funding some very heavy duty lights under the very good ‘Safer Routes to Public Transport’ scheme.  Former Cllr Arnie Gibbons chased this hard.  Combined with other measures, the kids went away and the area was much nicer, brighter and safer to walk through.  Unfortunately the lights near the entrance to 61-72 Stranraer Way have now both been broken.  Will try to get them fixed.

Elvis Presley alive, well and living on the Bemerton?

Telly_pembroke_streetWell, someone is throwing TV sets out of windows.  Elvis probably nips down the Dallas Burger bar on Caledonian Road for a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  Or did Elvis shoot his TVs ? Can’t remember.

Anyway have reported the telly outside the old Marquis of Salisbury building site/hole in ground.
