Herring seen on roof…

Heron_on_bbridge_court Ok, so it’s not actually a herring, but is in fact a heron. Seen here on the roof of Battlebridge Court which stands between Wharfdale Road and the Battlebridge Basin. The heron often visits the basin and is always a treat to see, but this is the first time it has been spotted on the roof. Many thanks to Jean James for this fantastic photo.

Act now! – 62-68 York Way planning application – the American Carwash site

6268_york_way_site_outline Locals will know that there has been a long planning saga with this tatty scruffy site on the corner of York Way and Wharfdale Road – we need to act now to get the building there the community deserves.  It is important to get your views in – it is pretty easy – just send an email in saying you object or support with your name and address. Email the council officer Matthew Rosel via this address quoting application number P070753  The deadline is this Wednesday 17th October although Islington (unlike Camden) does accept objections slightly late.  See below for more.

The developers have put in a slightly amended application as they try to game the system (or respond to concerns).  After looking at the new application I find that what I wrote last time still stands:

‘The American Carwash and scruffy lot at the corner of York Way and Wharfdale Road (62-68 York Way) have been a local eyesore for years. A developer has been sitting on planning permission there since 1995 while the value of the site skyrockets.’

‘Grounds for objection could include that the building is totally out of keeping with its surroundings (i think in a conservation area), its bulk, squatting on the large site dominates the area.  Even though York Central is taller, its elegant set backs (the steps of the ziggurat) make it occupy less space.  There is no community benefit in a hard pressed area.  Given past behaviour on the site (not building with extant planning permissions), this is likley to be a speculative application and should not be granted.’

‘This is a prestige, landmark site for Kings Cross and the community should push for something far more aspirational, with substantial community benefit.  Even if you don’t agree with the monster at Kings Place, at least there will be some community value from it.  To object you can email the case officer Matthew Rosel via this address quoting application number P070753 or to see all the plans and object using a webform go to this link and search for the application number above.’

This issue has been covered on the site here and here

Chance to vote by text/online for improvements to walking and cycling routes in Islington

Logo_sustrans Our neighbour from Thornhill Square, Aron C, passed this on – a way you can help support a local initiative to  obtain funds from the National Lottery to further this project.
You can register to vote for National Lottery funds that will pay for new walking and cycling routes in Islington.  Do this by either clicking the following link and entering your name and address in the little blue form on the RHS of the screen  http://www.sustransconnect2.org.uk/schemes/project_detail.php?id=52  ), or texting  ‘Connect2’ to 80010 (only used to text you back a number for voting).
Why bother?
Several projects are competing for a single grant. The winning project will be decided by a public vote  on television in December 2007 – if you register as directed above, you will be updated as to when and how to participate.

Who is behind this application?
The charity behind it is www.sustrans.org.uk
What do they plan to do with the National Lottery money?
To thread a route through the north of the borough, linking together several parks in Islington, to make it easier and more pleasant to cross Islington on foot or by bike. For example,  to make is safer and easier  to cross Highbury corner roundabout.

The Ladykillers – original trailer

Ladykillers_frederica_streetThe Ladykillers was one of the great British comedies and filmed in Kings Cross. Thanks to Sarah I have found the original trailer online. I’ve put the trailer in the new site KingsCrossTV.org here (while you are there have a look around at the other videos – some great stuff.)  The background shots of 1955 Kings Cross are becoming harder and harder to recognise as development proceeds.  But Martin Underwood’s superb, continually updated site here takes you through all the locations with great precision, maps and photos.  Alec Guinness was never better, except possibly as George Smiley (and perhaps not as Obi Wan Kanobi).

Colin Bailey – fine original prints, etchings and greeting cards of Kings Cross and St Pancras

Kingscrossskyline2_2Colin Bailey got in touch through the site.  He lived in Kings Cross in the late ’80s and early ’90s.  The darkness of Colin’s etchings capture the gloom of what was a difficult time for the area.  And some prints contrast nicely the human with the imposing architecture.   You can see and buy the Giclee prints on Colin’s site here.  At £45 it’s pretty good value for original work and it is always good to buy direct from the artist – you can even use PayPal.  If you are looking for something different for Xmas, they also come in greeting card sizes.

The Rest of the World

Rotw_2 ‘We are isolated. We travel the globe without moving. A boy cannot leave his room. A woman continues to be hurt. Jim waits for Maggie. We text our intentions. Skin cannot accept sun.
