Public Inquiry on the King’s Cross Triangle Lands Continues

Pix_2_from_june_04_brochure_web_cop The following information has been provided by Diana Shelley on behalf of Cally Rail Group and King’s Cross Railway Lands Group.

Dear friends and neighbours,

The public inquiry on the King’s Cross Triangle, which I alerted you to on 17 February, ran for four days in February and was adjourned as there was too much evidence to hear in the time.

It starts again at 10am this Monday, 31 March, continues on Tuesday, 1 April, and is due to end on Friday, 4 April. It will be held again at The Crescent Suite Highbury, 70 Ronalds Road (end nearest Highbury Fields), N5. It is currently scheduled for 10am till 5.30pm each day (lunch usually 1 to 2), though Friday may possibly end earlier.

The inquiry is taking place because King’s Cross developers, Argent, have appealed against Islington’s rejection last year of the Triangle application. Islington’s West Area committee rejected the scheme because it did not provide enough affordable housing. Cally Rail Group and the King’s Cross Railway Lands Group are ‘third parties’ which means we can give evidence and cross-examine witnesses. You can find out more about our joint case by visiting www.kxrlg.org.uk.

The current programme is:
Monday: Camden planning officer, Richard Kirby, gives evidence on housing; I give evidence on noise issues; noise expert Colin English gives evidence for Argent.
Tuesday: discussion on conditions.
Friday: closing speeches from all the parties.

It was cheering to see so many people in the public gallery in February and it would be wonderful to have a good turn-out again (apologies for giving such short notice). Even if you can only visit for an hour or so it would be good to see you. Monday and Friday morning seem likely to be the most interesting.

Best wishes,
Diana Shelley

Greenwall Project hot news

080214_entgreenwalls_vlvertical Local residents championing the Wharfdale Road greenwall project took a big step forward last week when they set up a new local Trust whose aim is to improve the area within a half mile radius of King’s Cross for the benefit of the local community. Called King’s Cross Community Projects, the Trust is now awaiting approval from the Charity Commission for charitable status. The Trust have already gained support from a popular local business – more news of this to come. Residents hope to use the Trust to raise funds for various projects in the future, the first being the Wharfdale Road greenwall project.

The image on the left is an internal vertical garden designed by perhaps the most famous and successful greenwall designer, Patrick Blanc.

For those wanting more information about greenwalls, roofs and urban greening in general, a good read is Building Green from the Mayor’s Office.

Do contact the Trust by email with ideas, comments or concerns about the greenwall and… watch this space for more news!

Vorsprung durch wurst – german sausage joint opens in kings cross

Wurst A neighbour Keith dropped me a line to recommend the new Berlin snacks on Kings Cross Road (on the corner opposite Konstam map) .  Keith reports:

‘Good food and nice guys in there serving German-style sausage snacks, sauerkraut, potatoes etc.  Sausages are imported from Germany each week and were delicious.  Sides such as side sauerkraut, potato salad, were all very reasonably priced, though the sausages were ‘export’ priced.  This place is a nice new addition to the King’s X area.’

Daniel has done a great in depth review here including vegan sausage coverage (we must have that drink Daniel..)

I am a great fan of german food and will head down there soon

Tocca Cafe – 346 Cally Road – Cally goes up market ?!

Tocca_interior_3 There’s a great new cafe on the Cally Road by Bridgeman Road (map).  Tocca is a welcome change from the Cally staple of ‘full English with extra Bubble’.  A small but good menu, wonderful interior (click photo to make it bigger), good coffee, nice staff.  I had a good smoked salmon and scrambled egg bagel there.  Not cheap, but good quality ingredients. And it doesn’t do an English….

St William’s Yard – trouble again

St_williams_yard_pavement This bonkers development on Rufford Street and Pembroke street, next to the Bemerton Estate is causing disruption again.  They have blocked off the pedestrian route between Bingfield Park and Pembroke Street which leads through to the Cally Road via the Bemerton.  To add insult to injury they have dumped about three standard skips in the street and a giant rubbish container (see pics).  There seem to be no skip licences, nor closure notices.  This is part of the public highway and needs a formal process to close it.  Will check with the Council whether this is licensed or not.  All hugely inconsiderate but typical of the daft way this development has been put together.  The developer will have great fun shifting these units in the teeth of a credit crunch.

UPDATE

Cllr Convery has got in touch

As far as I know, there is no valid order obtained by Tudorvale to close the Freeling Street pathway to Bingfield Park. This is another example of Tudorvale’s disregard for all the basic rules about their development. Their contractors also decided to work all day March 21st (a statutory public holiday) in clear breach of their planning conditions.

‘They have annexed a large part of Gifford Street (with Heras fencing) to store materials (aggregates and topsoil) and provide free parking for contractors’ vehicles whilst using Gifford Street and Pembroke Street as staging areas for the large-scale movement of building materials around their site.’

King’s Cross Springwatch

Minibill_2Yep, it’s very nearly Bill Oddie Springwatch time again… So far I’ve noticed a coot carrying a twig three times it’s size in an attempt to build a nest near St Pancras Lock, a pair of Great Tits picking up leaves, a female Blackbird looking daft with sprigs of grass hanging out of its beak, Starlings going generally crazy and the return of a Goldfinch to Battlebridge Basin. I’m looking forward to dusting off the camera now, hoping to get some good pictures of wildlife waking up in and around King’s Cross. So how about joining me? Wouldn’t it be great to give Bill a run for his money? Get your camera out and about and send your local wildlife images to springwatchkingscross@cookie.org.uk. We’ll put your images up on this site… Go for it!
