Islington – London’s dog poo capital?

P1010132 The Islington Tribune is the only local newspaper that has woken up to the absurdity of the Council’s dog proposals that set public hygiene back about a decade.  The Council’s proposals would remove many existing dog free zones in parks and gardens and chickens out of effective measures against inconsiderate dog owners.  See article and angry letters here

One letter sums it up nicely:

‘We live in a time when dangerous dogs are a national concern that frequently makes the headlines, and when there are also national concerns about childhood obesity and lack of exercise. So how can the council possibly be proposing to allow dogs into the few spaces that our borough has where children can safely run about? ‘

‘The vast majority of green space in the borough is already open for dog exercising. Child-friendly gardens provide a really valuable amenity for families, but the proposal will effectively turn these gardens from “dog-free” to “child-free” – in the borough with the least green space in the capital – with no adequate or open consultation’

The Council is putting dog owners before children’s safety and public health.  The Council has even ignored the advice of their own officers (in the case of Bingfield Park where they advised a ‘dogs on leads’ order after many years of bad dog owner behaviour).

I am at home recuperating from illness and went for a gentle stroll in the warm Spring sunshine in Bingfield Park and the amount of dog poo was ridiculous.  There is still time to fill in the Council’s quick, simple online survey here to call for stronger measures against inconsiderate dog owners and more dog free or dogs on lead zones.

Kings Cross snow…..

Snow_scape The top end of Kings Cross got substantially heavier snow than the station end on Sunday.  Over an inch up here with big fluffy flakes.  Bingfield Park was transformed, kids making snowmen etc.  (click the pics below to make them bigger)

Any snow pics you would like to share through this site? Just mail them to me here.

The Megaro – A Boutique Hotel in King’s Cross!

Pix_5

The Bulletin Board has now received two positive reviews of a new hotel/restaurant in the neighbourhood.

The first from Sean Murray from Regent’s Quarter, and the second from Jill Carter from York Central.  This is what Jill had to say:

Last night, my husband and I had the pleasure of stopping into the new Megaro Hotel  for drinks and a very warm tour from their General Manager, Francisco Ventura – 23-27 Euston Road, St Pancras – directly across from King’s Cross Station on the south side of Euston www.hotelmegaro.co.uk).

We were extremely impressed with this very chic boutique hotel, big, gorgeous rooms and friendly staff. Even more impressive is that it just opened a few weeks ago!  The Megaro restaurant has gotten rave reviews already under the direction of an impressive executive chef Paul Ribbands.

We will be going back to dine this week with friends and will definitely put out-of-town guests up here going forward.  I believe the introductory room rates range from approximately £85 to £125 a night – but folks should check first.

Folk might want to stop in and meet Francisco and take a look around.

Here is another review which is very impressive:

Revised Licensing Hours for King’s Place

Kp1As a result of strong objections voiced by local residents and our Councillor Paul Convery (over 25 letters and five folks in attendence at the daytime meeting), a firm case was made to limit the extension of the original hours granted to King’s Place as part of the Conditions of their original planning application.

Those original Conditions stated that there would be no amplified music played on the external areas of the proposed A3 uses, and that the proposed A3 uses shall not operate outside the hours of 0800 to 2300 on any day.  In this new request they had been requesting extensions to some activities to as late as 0100.

The Licensing Commited has now granted them the following:

1)      The provision of regulated entertainment: plays, exhibition of films, live music, recorded music, performance of dance and facilities for making music and dancing from 0800 to 2400 midnight, Mondays to Sundays.

2)       The supply of late night refreshment (hot food and drinks) from 2300 to 2400 midnight, Mondays to Sundays.

3)       The sale of alcohol from 0800 to 2400 midnight, Mondays to Sundays.

4)       Those licensable activities shall cease on the outside terrace area at 2230 and the outside terrace area to be cleared by 2300.

5)       The outside areas shall not be used

a)       For regulated entertainment by way of any amplified sound.

b)      After 2230

Kp2In summary, they’re getting to operate inside one hour later, but must now cease all outside activities 30 minutes earlier.  If you would like to read the minutes of the meeting – Download minutes_of_meeting_Licensing_19_03_08.pdf

But this is not the end of the story!!!!!  The original Planning Application Conditions still remain in force, so this means that King’s Place must now go back to the Planning Department and file an application to adjust the Conditions to be consistent with Licensing.

So, for those of you who may still be unhappy with this situation, there will be another opportunity to have your say.

Watch this space for more!

On a more positive note, take a look at their website to see how their plans are developing – www.kingsplace.co.uk

Help stop dog poo and bad dog behaviour – only takes five mins

Dog_poo Badly controlled dogs are a menace in the densely populated urban area that is Islington.   The Council is running a consultation on how to control dogs with the new powers they have been given by the Government.  You can fill in the online questionnaire by clicking here.  it only takes five minutes and is easy to use.  Have a go – if you don’t, the next time you step into something smelly you only have yourself to blame.

I am keen to see dogs on leads in Bingfield Park and stronger penalties for not cleaning up after a dog.  The children’s adventure playground in Bingfield Park almost unbelievably has to factor dog poo and badly controlled dogs into a health and safety assessment before they can allow kids to play in the park.  And as a result they don’t play in the park very often.  This is bonkers – we can’t put dogs before children. Yet the Council has chickened out of tough measures in the park despite recommendations from its own officers (i covered this before here).

Cleaning up the streets – do your bit for a Spring clean

Cally_rubbish_post_office Kings Cross streets have got a lot better over the years.  But we still need to keep reporting problems as they arise – otherwise resources get transferred elsewhere.  And the tippers and taggers come back.  I reported about a dozen things today (see photo gallery here).  It’s really easy, only takes a minute and most things get fixed.  You can either: ring Contact Islington 0207 527 2000 just do it from your mobile when you are on the scene.  Or if you prefer a written record, email them (click here) – sending a picture of the offending problem is useful.  A third way is to use fixmystreet a clever online service that helps you report things by clicking on a map and helps you chase the problem.  I use a mix of all three – as it is Spring, do your bit and have a go.

I help the Council by occasionally chairing a local clean up group for them where some residents sit down with the environment staff at the Council – If you have some persistent problems that you think the Council or someone isn’t solving drop me a line and I shall see what i can do.
