Another Late Nite License Application – The Fellow, 24 York Way

24_york_way_3 An Application for a new Premises Licence (Reference PREM/3884) has now been received by the Council for an establishment to be known as The Fellow to be located at 24 York Way, London, N1 9AA the former home of The Masque Bar.  While I believe The Masque was simply a ground floor operation, this Application extends to the 1st floor and the roof-terrace.

The Application is seeking permission for the following: (note, I have only focused on the most contentious elements of the Application):

Activity

Mon thru Sun

Consumption of alcohol on the premises

1100 to 0230

Film, dancing, and live music

0900 to 0200

The complete Application can be seen at: http://www.islington.gov.uk/Leisure/licences/LicenceSearch.asp

(At the bottom of page you’ll find a search box – use the drop down menu to select “York Way,” click Submit and look for Reference PREM/3884 – it should be at the top of the list)

Should you wish to comment on this application the last date for representations is 30 July 2008.  Your comments can be made online (go to the Application as indicate above and look for the link to “Representations.”  Alternately you can email Simon Gallacher, the Licensing Officer directly at: Simon.Gallacher@islington.gov.uk.  Please be sure to include the Application Reference: Prem/3884, and your address, so the Committee can see where you live.

Personally, I will be objecting to this license as it is currently configured.  I am not against granting any late-night licenses per se; however feel that operators must earn the respect of the Community before such licenses are granted.

I will argue that any new license should be initially granted to 2330 hours Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and 0030 on Friday and Saturday nights.  (Should the establishment wish to hold special events, they can apply for those as needed.)  Then, after a minimum of one year should they wish to apply for a later license as in the case of this establishment, until 0200, they can do so.  I feel this granting of licenses “carte blanche” is an insult to local residents.  The onus should be on the operator to demonstrate their level of responsibility rather then forcing residents to raise the issues after these licenses are granted.

Such a regime will also benefit the operator, as late-licences will have to be earned, they will be a much more valuable and prized possession.

If we are going to improve the quality of life in King’s Cross it’s important for folks to stand up and be counted.  This is a reasonable approach that can work for all concerned.  Please tell the Licensing Committee what you want – after all they do work for you!  Don’t they?

Lost Cat!

Black_catIS THIS YOUR CAT???

This lovely little black cat has been hanging around Northdown St and Balfe St for several days now. She is very friendly and has obviously had an owner till very recently. Local residents have been feeding her but we are worried about the heavy traffic and other dangers that being a stray in Kings X might mean.
She often sits on window sills or scratches front doors, crying to be let in. She is missing her home very much – do you know where it is??

Please leave comments here or email branwynbach@gmail.com with any info. Thanks

This site’s second birthday – five hundred articles up!

Happy_birthday This website is two years old on Friday 4 July – it’s amazing that something set up as list of broken things on the street now has over 500 articles (more than one every working day) and 300 comments with our community films having over 16,000 views.  Readers have grown to about 200 a day and we now have six authors (stattos see footnote).

This is all the more amazing given that the site is focussed on a tiny area of North London about a mile long by half a mile wide.  We have three spin offs: an embryonic internet TV station, a Facebook Group and a campaign site.  And we do it with no funding in our spare time. It’s ultra-local news, campaigns and events by with and from the community.

This is a huge community effort – none of this would have been possible without the support of a large network of local people.  I can’t thank everyone but I am particularly indebted to Stephan for his tireless support, challenge and promotion since 2006 and Sophie for her contribution since 2007.  Sian, LisaT, Sarah and recently Daniel also contribute great stuff in their own names.  Paul Convery has proved the model of a responsive councillor commenting on all relevant issues and helping to get things followed through. Diana and Phil have been stalwart in not letting me get away with mistakes and generating original material. Lisa P is a valuable source of community info.   Stuart and Alastair keep an eagle eye on Rufford Street, Roger fought a noble campaign on the Post Office and Mike on noisy pubs.  This is a late night roll call so apols if i missed you off.

On our first birthday I set out some highlights that have built community spirit by working together.  We have had huge success in getting the streets cleaned up by attracting decent resources to the area to sweep the streets.  Fought dozens of local planning and licensing battles especially on sex shops, won a campaign against Cemex the world’s biggest concrete company, made Network Rail pay attention to the community.  But we still haven’t won on the squirrel menace.

What do you think we should do more of in the future?

Statto footnote
Kxenvperfsa Sitemeter has been running on the site for just under a year, recording 36,730 unique visits, average 135 per day.  120 people have subscribed to receive an automatic email from Feedburner with the day’s posts. Typepad records about 220 page views a day with a seasonal pattern – click to enlarge the chart which shows page views seasonally adjusted by a three month rolling average.  Film stats- YouTube viewing aggregate 16,432 views from 27 films or 13,545 for 26 films adjusted for squirrels/squirrely adjusted.

New eco-nightclub where the dancers generate electricity!

PixWith all the serious news that we put out on the Bulletin Board there is always time for something that you just would not believe if you didn’t see it written down.

So goes this latest tidbit submitted by my neighbour Freddie D. from York Central.  It relates to BAR SURYA located on Pentonville Road up near Weston Rise.  I would not want to steal the Daily Mail’s thunder, so take a look at this article if you’re a young, hip, environmentalist.

Actually I’m sure if you’re an old, hip, environmentalist you can also attend.

Ben Kinsella tribute in Bingfield Park

Ben_kinsella_wall_2 These impromptu tributes by local young people to Ben Kinsella appeared in Bingfield Park yesterday.  Paul Converys touching comment here explains that Ben played football with CYP the local youth group.

‘A random act of violence in the small hours of Sunday morning has shattered a family and shocked a neighbourhood.

There is a palbable sense of distress around here. Ben was a local boy. He played football for the Copenhagen Youth Project team. His desperate phone call begging for help minutes before he died was to a young man who was the CYP’s table tennis mentor. Many of us have tangible connections with this incident, it’s timing and place. ‘

‘We desperately need activities and services that help kids to understand that violence is the wrong reaction. Co-operation, self respect and respect for others has to be strengthened by giving kids the space and resource to relate to others and to find themselves. They also need to burn energy and engage in activity that is risky yet controlled. That requires massive investment in activities for young people.’

Ben_k_pitch Intended or not, the only way the tag on the surface of the pitch will go is if hundreds of young people play football together on it. Normally I am tough on graffiti and on the causes of grafitti (Banksy) but i hope this stays for a while until plans for a more permanent memorial are in place.
