New name for King’s Cross Station campaign

Bannerhead2

At the first campaign organisers meeting last week, the campaign pressing Network Rail to replace the entrances to the station that will be closed as a result of current redevelopment with a pedestrian and cycle bridge gained a new name: Battlebridge Crossing.

This week's Islington Gazette has carried an article about the Mayor's Transport guru, Kulveer Ranger, pledging his and Transport for London's support for the campaign.

You can support the campaign in various ways:

1. Sign the petition and get all your contacts to do the same.

2. Write to your MP asking them to press the Transport Minister to get Network Rail to fund and build the bridge we need (it'll cost less than 1% of the station redevelopment budget).

3. Join us leafleting outside the new Guardian offices next week.

You can get the latest news about the campaign by subscribing to the campaign blog.

Fire follows several explosions at King’s Place

King's Place fire 1Several explosions occured on the roof of King's Place about half an hour ago and were followed by fire which raged whilst further explosions blew smoke into the sky above Battlebridge Basin. The fire brigade attended and quickly doused the fire.

Fire brigade attending King's Place Meanwhile, concerned residents of nearby flats and even nearer narrowboats gathered with visitors to the Canal Museum on the towpath opposite.

The scare was exacerbated by this being the second such incident at King's Place. The first occurred during construction when a gas tank exploded resulting in residents and businesses being evacuated.

Kings Cross walkability audit condemns Kings Cross and St Pancras road crossings

P1010289 Crossing the road in Kings Cross is a nightmare and now we have an official report commissioned by TfL that sets it out in black and white. Basically the report by experts on the walking environment condemns the situation in Kings Cross.  Many locals took part in a walkability audit in vile January weather.  The report by TRL Living Streets has finally been released under FoI thanks to What Do They Know.com  The report says:

  • the pedestrian environment was generally poor
  • links of limited effective width
  • crossing provision inadequate
  • personal security often compromised
  • wayfdingin is made difficult
  • notes the sheer dominance and impact of road traffic
  • the Euston road is ‘highly dangerous’
  • provision for sensory and mobility impaired users is lacking
  • one bus-stop was in a ‘ludicrous’ position
  • at the York Way/Pentonville Road crossing ‘casualties were inevitable’ and ‘like a battleground’ at rush hour

The most entertaining bit is the Annex A where the report lays into the individual crossings we all have to suffer on a daily basis.  The real challenge now this report has been levered out of TfL is to use the unarguable evidence to do something about it.  This will mean TfL, Islington and Camden working together in an unprecedented bit of co-ordinated working.  We shall get a campaign running – any volunteers?

Kings Cross Parents’ Austrian Delights, Sacher Torte & Kaffee Melange Bitte!

IMAGE_325 Parents at Kings Cross are now able to enjoy Vienna Style coffee and tart at the most unsuspecting of all locations:  On Coram Fields Children Play Grounds.  The old small cafeteria  which was wasting away over the last few years with old chairs and rubbish, has been transformed into a coffee take away with style and yet at incredibly reasonable prices. The place is called Kipferl which is a small cookie bake with powder sugar, and available for trial with your other orders.    The Vienna Style Coffee House atmosphereIMAGE_323 e is perhaps not fully recreated due to the fact that it is still a cafeteria, but there is at least something of the Kaffeehaus in the atmosphere.  In Vienna and other Austrian locations the Kaffeehaus is one that strikes with pure elegance, waiters in Black and White serve you and ask you if you wish to digest the the morning paper with your Kaffee (can I have a shot of dae syrup in it please) and sweet delights.  These places were the origin of a high newspaper culture of elegant musical Vienna around the 1900s.  At Coram Fields you will find designer chairs and best coffee and optional cream (Sahne) plus a lovely range of fabulous cakes served by Austrian members of staff.

Now for everyone who knows Coram Fileds, it is no adult admitted with out being accompanied by a child (a double reason to go there now…  both to have fun with the kids and with the coffee…), so childless persons have to do some volunteer child minding to get in, but all is not lost.

Since Coram Fileds is strictly speaking in the ward of Bloomsbury (yet 3 minutes walk from the South Western border of Kings Cross) I may be able to refer you to another local delight.  Brunswick Centre has recently seen the opening entourage of the baker's masters of Pâtisserie Valérie (originally Soho).
Kipferl also has a second shop further away in 70 Long Lane EC1 and their website is www.kipferl.co.uk

The delightful news goes together with some other German speaking more bitter news from Kings Cross proper.  Berlin Snack, the original German hot sausage "imbiss" on Kings Cross Road capitulated after only being open for about six months.   The Germans suffered from a custmer flow from the start, and were forced midway to revert to breakfast making for some of the local tourists.  Still it wasn't enough to survive it seems.  According to the co owner Tony the rent for the small unit in which they were placed, was more expensive than the recently also closed down pub Britannia. You can still read about them here on Kings Cross Local Environment:  Vorsprung Durch Wurst, and on Daniels Counter Blog Berlin snack: New at East Kings Cross, what are now a historical records of their short existence.
