Arson attack – Rufford Street

Arson_rufford_street_2 Some pictures of an arson attack at the end of Rufford Street when some bins were set alight.
A local contributor says:

‘two youths came back hours later…boasting about arson and petrol’.

Fortunately no one was hurt, not even in the flat above the bin fire – we have to be thankful that modern buildings are relatively fireproof…

Not only were many families put at severe danger by this fire on on 11th October, one household has been forced out by the smoke damage and is having to endure temporary accommodation pending work on the block. Although the burned-out garbage containers were exchanged today (21st Oct) not much else has happened. Circle 33 have been pretty tight lipped about what they are doing to repair the damage and get families there back to normality.

One contributing factor to the seriousness of this fire was that some idiot living in the block had dumped an entire sofa on top of the garbage bins and this caused the fire to burn very vigorously (aided by petrol) and caused the worst of the smoke damage. It was stupidly reckless to dump this sofa and I have asked C33 to investigate who did this and to take proportionate action.

Also, the initial police response was not terribly reassuring. I was not convinced that the investigative officers who attended the fire really had treated this incident with sufficient seriousness. The fire was discussed at the Safer Neighbourhood Panel meeting on 16th Oct and on the following day, our Safer Neighbourhood Team went down to Bingfield Park and retrieved the petrol can which had been used by the arsonists. It had been left hidden in the park and, as a result of the SNT’s action, this evidence has been checked by a Scene of Crime Officer to identify any forensic clues especially fingerprints. Hopefully this will yield some leads in the investigation. I have asked one of the Inspectors at Tolpuddle to give this investigation greater priority and to report progress.

What is the betting that the person who dumped the sofa will be punished to a far greater degree than those that lit the fire (if they are ever caught, that is)?

Did you know Circle 33 have just decided to rebuild the bins area and gate exactly the same as they dont want to pay towards any improvements/changes and they have still done nothing to fix the broken gate! The neglect is appalling and I cannot believe we are going to let them get away with it.
