Pair of Cormorants on Battlebridge Basin
On Tuesday 22 April Jean James spotted a pair of Cormorants, one sitting on the nesting platforms towards the south western end, the other on the prow of a narrow boat on the north eastern end.
Cormorants have Amber endangered status with the RSPB. Although they are usually found around the UK coastline on rocky shores, coastal lagoons and estuaries, they are increasingly being seen inland at reservoirs, lakes and gravel pits.
Doctor Who fans may find the latin name for the Cormorant strangely familiar: Phalacrocorax carbo!
They certainly are reminiscent of a pre-historic creature, particularly in profile as seen in Jean’s photo.
If you spot any interesting wildlife cropping up in and around King’s Cross this spring, send us your images and we’ll put them up on this site.
Thanks for the info….I am trying to put together a list of what celebs are doing to help the environment. Ed Begley Jr. is having a sweepstakes where he flys you to Hollywood and gives you tips on how to go green ( http://www.earthlab.com/life/livingwithed/ ) Pretty crazy stuff. Obviously there are many others. Drop me a link if you have any on the top of your head. Thanks again for the info!
