This has got to be one of the best kept secrets in our neighbourhood – the Portman Butchers at 74 Caledonian Road (N1 9DN). Forget about the supermarket – why not buy your meats and poultry from a real butcher shop? They are happy to supply local residents who are prepare to place a small order (freezer orders) – and at wholesale prices. As these guys start work in the wee hours of the morning, they actually close around noon, so it’s best to give them a call first at (020) 7837-9523 to see if you can pop over to the shop – speak to George, the owner who has been in our area for 35 years – or Chris.

Exactly the kind of small business we need to retain around here. In January 2007, the Council’s highways people dreamed up a scheme which would have converted the bus lane on Caledonian Road into a 24/7 operation. This business would have had to close and move away had that happened (they load-up deliveries early morning). Fortunately enough traders and residents objected so the scheme was hurriedly abandoned. The scheme would have had to be agreed by the West Area Committee and I think the traffic planners realised they had no hope of getting it past Councillors.
I didn’t realise we could buy from them – great stuff (I really, really hate buying meat from a supermarket)!
Looking at the shop from outside with the England flags, I would have expected this shop to have a racial bias. Am I being to judgemental?
I have used Portman Butchers for years and find it so much easier, more efficient and much cheaper than the Supermarkets. George, the owner is always happy to help and the selection of meats is endless! Would recommend ordering in advance, but he’s always got a good supply of popular meats. With regards to the England Flag comment, I think they’re gone now, but to be honest, would you really look at this as being a racist act????… Sometimes I think the world has gone crazy!
i’ve used portman butchers for years. they sell the best of british beef, lamb ect.hence the flags,as any body been into supermarkets look what they have on there english products yes its an english flag, what is wrong with you people are you ashamed of buying british goods from a british shop in england
