Famous designer and art director, Jonathan Barnbrook, has designed a billboard poster on Goods Way, all about the changing face of Kings Cross. It's only there for 3-4 weeks so get out and see it now if you can!

In his own words… 'King’s Cross of course. A historically signifcant area which is now changing drastically. Our text explores what has happened in the past there, the importance of St. Pancras church, and the [positive] philosophical significance of Britain no longer being an island but connected to mainland Europe via the Channel tunnel from St. Pancras train station….'

More details on his blog here.

York Way Kebab Take-away Appeals Council’s Decision to Refused Planning Permission

Cafe After winning the battle with a local Kebab take-away local residents have now learned that the operator is seeking an appeal against this Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for the following development at 2B, York Way, Islington, London, N1 9AA:

P100224: Change of use to hot food take-away (A5 use class), installation of new shopfront including awning, along with extract ducting.

Cafe_new_front This is bad news and local residents/councillors will again have to object to continue the fight to protect their environment from these developments.

However some discretion should be used.  In the interim, the establishment HAS modified their signage and the new look is a considerable improvement over the past look.  The photo to the right is the way the place currently looks.

What still remains is their desire to move from being a "coffee/sandwich bar" to a hot-food (kebab) take-away.

To find out exactly what to do to file your objection, please go to the earlier story, which has now been updated with the actions require and is just below this posting.

Earlier Story:

After unauthorized attempts to convert the subject shop from a coffee shop serving cold sandwiches, to a take-away kebab shop serving hot food, the Planning Department put it's foot down and refused the owners retrospective application.

This is a big victory for the concept of regeneration and is hopfully a positive sign on the Planning Committee's attitude to respect and support local residents desires over the future development of the King's Cross area.

Bravo!

Gran Sasso From Coffee Bar to Caffè and Wine Bar to Restaurant!

Locationopened For those of us who are regulars at this long time local caffè (Gran Sasso Caffè, 44-46 Caledonian Road, N1 9DT), it's
been the coffee and atmosphere that has made it the place to hang-out, use the internet and have meetings, but now there's more!

For some months now the owner's, Mario and Val, have been upgrading the caffè.  This has included completely redecorating the inside of the place, hiring an Italian chef to expand the menu and buying a major-league gas pizza oven (under some pressure from moi, I must add), to transform our coffee bar hang-out into a real Italian Restaurant.

IMG_1383 Last night, they launched dinner service which included a lovely selection of starters, home-made pastas, real Italian Pizza, several main entrees, and Italian desserts. (They also have a full license to serve beer, wine and spirits.)  Dinner service begins at 7:00 PM and runs until 10:00 PM.  You can take a look at the menu here: Download.

Gran Sasso has been in our neighbourhood for almost ten years now, and Val and Mario have been there for seven – starting as staff, but eventually buying the place from the former owner Enzo, who moved up North.  There is a strong local following and they boy's hope that their neighbours will come in to sample the new menu and enjoy the ecletic atmosphere.

For those of you who do drop in and mention the King's Cross Community Bulletin Board, there will be a glass of wine on the house for every diner.

We hope you drop in and support this long-time local establishment.  By the way, my favorite – The Gran Sasso Special Pizza with Parma Ham and Rocket…  enjoy!

GLA Members vist Kings Cross to talk open spaces and the bridge over the tracks

The Mayors Planning and Housing Committee members visited Kings Cross today as part of their enquiry into public realm issues.  With local groups we had a good chat about the bridge over the tracks, the permeability of the Kings Cross redevelopment and the difficulties of working across a borough boundary. We'll write it up more later but here are two audio interviews.  Good to see members backing residents on the need for a bridge and deciding to take a much closer interest in future planning applications in Kings Cross.
