Where and how to vote on Thursday – Kings Cross polling stations

Please remember to vote on Thursday – we don’t care who you vote for, just remember to do it.  The election is not just for the Mayor but also the GLA members who will hold him/her to account.  So even if you don’t like any mayoral candidates vote for a GLA member to keep an eye on them.

Advice on the whole process of voting, including an easy to use map of all London’s polling stations can be found over at the impartial London Elects website (London Elects is the team that organises the mechanics of voting – no I’d never heard of them either). I’d rather refer you to their map than do one myself.

Support our local youth!!!

New Horizon Youth Centre, on the Somers Town side of KX, does the most fantastic work with local youth. Chaired by Jon Snow of Channel4 News fame, the local centre was originally founded by Lord Longford 42 years ago. So, rather than digging in with youthophobia resulting from the quite understandable fear of young kids gathering around the area with little to do… here’s a way we can all help local kids work towards a positive future.

And have a laugh into the bargain… not bad eh!

KX place plan – send in your views

Camden and Islington Councils have collaborated on producing a draft place plan for KX.

On the plan’s web page they say,

King’s Cross is an important and vibrant area that will experience major growth and change in the coming years, mainly as a result of the King’s Cross Central development and improvements to King’s Cross Station.  These changes create both opportunities and challenges for local communities.

Islington and Camden Councils’ have therefore been working together to develop a Place Plan for the King’s Cross area.  This plan sets out a vision for the future of King’s Cross that reflects the priorities for the area.  It is supported by a set of actions to ensure that changes in the area deliver services, facilities and public spaces that meet the needs of people who live, work and visit the area.”

Cally ward invites you…

In recent years residents have become much more aware of the issues of anti-social behaviour and the things that can be done to address this type of problem. There are a lot of different organisations who have a role to play in directly dealing with, and helping to resolve, anti-social behaviour. The Islington Met Police, Islington Community Safety Teams and Islington Housing Department work with local people, communities, other social landlords and various organisations to address problems of anti-social behaviour by working in partnership to use the most appropriate interventions to stop these problems and support victims.

A large number of calls are received by the police throughout the year from people complaining about ‘nuisance youths’.  Some of these calls are not to report any crime, damage, noise or a direct threat but many are from people who feel intimidated by groups of youngsters who congregate in public places such as on the Caledonian Road and in parks and estates. Children and young people are part of our communities and will always congregate; it’s a natural part of growing up and very few youngsters who meet in public places are actually committing any criminal or other offence. Young people often gather in groups because it makes them feel safer, choosing places near shops because they are well lit and busy.  In many cases they are actually unaware that their presence alone can seem intimidating to others.

However there is a difference between young people acting deliberately to cause damage or upset and those who have simply gathered to socialise.

The Caledonian Ward Partnership Public Meeting is an opportunity for local residents to hear how all the different agencies have worked together over the past year and in some cases over many years to address issues of crime and anti-social behaviour in the Caledonian Ward.   More importantly this is your opportunity to put forward your ideas on how to make our ward safer for everyone in our community.

The meeting is also an opportunity for you as residents to meet your local councillors, shape the future of neighbourhood management in the Caledonian Ward and to contribute to the priorities for the area.

Highbury Corner this week

As part of a continuing mission to support the police and judiciary in Kings Cross here, in the public interest is a list of charges etc scheduled at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court this week that have a local connection to Kings Cross.  If you wish to attend court to watch and see justice being done then the approximate times are below.

This is the second week I have published extracts from the (120 page) Full Court List.  The list is depressing reading but i take comfort from the fact that cases are going forward against people who are alleged to have committed crimes locally.  I am pleased that Highbury Magistrate Mel Simon JP has been in touch to:

‘Glad to see the court is now helping you…..I would also like to repeat our offer to present to any group that wants to understand more about the court processes and have an opportunity to talk directly to magistrates. If you want to promote a meeting(s) via your website, then we will be pleased to assist.’

If you would like to take Mel up on his offer mail highburymic@gmail.com and they will be in touch.

Some important points to remember: people below are innocent until proven guilty, I have edited out most personal details (DOB, address etc) as, even though this is public information, the data protection position is unclear and it’s worth re-iterating that this is public information that will be read out in open court.  The people and alleged offences below either are reported to have an address in Kings Cross or are alleged to have committed a crime in the general area.

The comments section below enables anyone to correct errors but, other than correcting errors I won’t accept comments on individual cases to avoid problems with contempt. Listings times like trains are variable, cases can fall or be withdrawn or come forwards and it is be worth checking with the court before you visit on  GL-HCORNERMCLIST@hmcts.gsi.gov.uk

Of course, many of the issues above could be avoided if I could get hold of a list of results – the outcomes of cases. But I am told that such a weekly list isn’t available – it’s the kind of thing the community should see. I shall try to report what the result was in these cases.

Thanks for the Ugandan phones

Seeds for Development, founded by Alison Hall who has strong KX connections, would like to thank everyone that donated mobile phones after her plea back in December.

The phones arrived safely. Alison has just got back from a visit where she saw how the phones have changed farmers lives radically, helping them to develop their businesses on a scale that wouldn’t have been posible without the them. Pictured is Demon (at Parabong in Northern Uganda) who lost his brother in the conflict with Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army in the 90s. His brother was one of a large group of people forced to lie down in a row whilst they were decapitated one by one leaving a river of blood running away from the local school where the massacre had taken place. The school didn’t reopen until 2010.

Alison updates her blog when she can, it’s well worth a read. She picked up copies of the farmer’s five year plans for coffee growing – a new venture – on her recent trip and will be assisting with promoting and developing these, including finding a way into the UK coffee market. She’ll be working with farmers to trade directly to the UK.

Phones are always welcome. If you are able to donate an old phone (with charger please!) email sophie@kccp.org.uk to arrange to drop it off in KX.

(Personal note from Sophie to her neighbours – thanks for being so understanding whilst Alison’s lovely dog Gypsy stayed with us during Alison’s trip to Uganda. It makes a big difference for Alison to know Gypsy’s in good hands whilst she’s away)
