Islington Council in farce on Rufford Street

ContainersThe saga of the huge blue sea containers stacked two high on Rufford Street and Randells road drags on like a Whitehall Farce set in Islington Town Hall (see posts  with photos of just how big these things are here here and here).  The containers are for workmen doing work for the Council who put them here on instruction from Council officers.  They appeared in our area without any consultation in October.  In the latest iteration, Council officers have shown some remarkable incompetence.  Working with the Council, the owners have moved half of the containers but without working out where they should go – which other street they should blight.  And half are left behind on Rufford Street and Randell’s Road to continue blocking traffic and pedestrians!  Nuts.

Some very frustrated emails are being exchanged with the Council, ultimatley Cllr Lucy Watt is respsonsible.  I can’t understand why a Lib Dem Council, with their emphasis on ultra local democracy could bring this blight to a challenging area without any consultation at all.  Why were they not put on a street in a less difficult area or in an industrial area ? Looks like we shall be stuck with them for another month.  I have emailed Cllr Watt to see if she can give us an explanation (click on the lin ot drop her a mail and join in).

UPDATE

I was losing the plot above when i wrote that this morning – slight improvement this evening – all the containers on Rufford Street have been removed – hurrah – now only two out of the original eight remain – round the corner on Randell’s Road…….

Kings Cross Access – crunch time

Kings_cross_station_3_5 It’s crunch time.  Network Rail have not changed their mind on locking Islington residents out of the station.  The people who can change this are Camden Councillors and their planning officers.  We need to lobby them by making formal objections to the plans.  Stefan Schulte has set out how to do it on his excellent email list:

Go the the Kings Cross application direct on the Camden website by clicking here or if that is playing up go here and enter the application number 2006/3387/P.  Then click on ‘comment on application’ in the top left corner and fill in the simple form – remember to tick ‘object’.  Keep it simple – in your comment focus on the loss of residential or local amenity – it makes the area a much less nice place to live and work, the community safety impact, the impact on regeneration, the lack of consultation with the community and the effect on a listed building.  Also ask for a foot bridge to access the station from Wharfdale Road funded by Network Rail from the huge revenue they will earn from having a new platform to charge train companies for.

IT ONLY TAKES FIVE MINUTES – YOU MIGHT REGRET NOT DOING IT ONE COLD WINTER EVENING WHEN YOU STRUGGLE IN THE RAIN DOWN YORK WAY PAVEMENT.

Please get as many friends as you can to object.

Kings Cross Access – update on campaigning

Kings_cross_station_3_6 I have been on holiday while others have been hard at work.  Here is an update on campaigning.  Thanks so much to everyone who has done their bit so far – great to see the community pulling together.

Network Rail have come up with a spurious argument that the current entrance opposite Wharfdale Road, used for over 100 years is ‘dangerous’ – no idea where they got this from.  The ramp is an integral part of the station.

They are not prepared to consider engineering solutions such as a foot bridge spanning the platform ends to provide access from the East of Kings Cross over to the West near St Pancras (the Grade One listed Paddington station has such a bridge across the platfroms from the Hammersmith and City line).  Camden Council have a long term aim to get a bridge over the tracks from Wharfdale to the new boulevard parallel to York Way.  But they don’t see this connecting to the platforms – they ar epaying too much attention to alleged access problems to the station form such a bridge – i think this is simply a design issue.

Stephan Schulte has used his excellent community email list to spread the message set out in the revised planning application:

Page 14, of the Network Rail Access Statement for Planning Application, King’s Cross Station Enhancement, Issue 1, dated December 2006 states:

Passengers from the East and Northeast directions currently benefit from an access to the station at the northeast corner of the station at the Northern entrance of the cab road. However, this access is unauthorised should not be used for safety reasons and will be lost once platform Y is constructed

Network Rail ignore the vital safety point Sarah Swann has made – if there is a major incident in the tube (such as a repeat of the awful fire) or on Pentonville Foad at the South of the station there will be no way of evacuating thousands of people safely to the North away from danger once the goods ramp exit at Wharfdale Road goes.

Victoria Pender, Director for Community issues at Network Rail has belatedly written to me.  Her surreal letter (i shall scan and post it here later)  looks like a mail merge done by an intern from a database of apologia letters on file at a PR agency.  It doesn’t adress any of the points we are making yet repeatedly claims to have studied the needs of the community.  Which we know they haven’t – Network Rail have ignored the community feeling on this issue.

Emily Thornberry MP has written to Network Rail and to Camden Devleopment officers to back up our case.  Good for her

The Gazette carried a good piece and photo in last week’s edition

Renewal of Sex Shop License for 9 Caledonian Road

Sex_signage_1What’s your position?

For those of you who are not aware, the owners of 9 Caledonian Road have applied to renew their license with Islington Council to operate a “Licensed Sex Shop” on their premises.  This is a renewal not a new license.  This location has had such a license for the past several years and had been operating as the King’s Cross Prowler.  It is now operating under the name Soho Original Bookshop.

If this issue comes as a surprise, it may be because one of the Conditions originally imposed on the premises was that there must be no material of a sexual nature promoted in their front window to passers-by or no signage on the outside of the premises indicating such material was available inside.  In fact, the front of both the Prowler and now Soho Books has been one of the most attractive on the block.

It seems to me that this is an issue of the right of proprietors to sell whatever material they desire (as long as it is legal), verses the need to ensure that the perception of our neighbourhood is not being negatively affected in any way.  To date, the Condition in place seems to have done that effectively – but this is my opinion.

As some folks may disagree, it is important to get your views on the record immediately as the consultation period ends 25 January 2007.  You can do so by sending your comments to:

Email: jeff.scott@islington.gov.uk

Or write to:

Public Protection Division
Islington Council

Use Reference No. 112618 – Sex Shop License Renewal, 9 Caledonian Road, N1 9DT

I would also copy our local Councillor Paul Convery at: paul.convery@islingtonlabour.org.uk to ensure that your views are heard and circulated to those Councillors that will be attending the actual Licensing Meeting.

Click Here to go to the Council’s Site for more info.

Please make your views heard.  The more you do, the greater the likelihood of future actions being oriented around what the local public wants!

How Important is Local Safety to You?

Clip_image002 Do you want more police on the beat in our area?

If you’re interested in the improving the quality of life in King’s Cross, one of the most valuable meetings that you should consider attending is the Caledonian Ward Safer Neighbourhoods Panel that usually meets about once a month.

As the title would indicate, this meeting is about local residents working directly with the Safer Neighbourhood’s Police Team to discuss ways in which police resources can be best directed to problem areas in our Ward.  More importantly, as this meeting is chaired by our local Councillor Paul Convery, your views will be directly heard by your elected representative as well as the Safer Neighbourhoods Police Team!

One of the initiatives, now being pushed by Councillor Convery is a development of a pilot project to increase the size of our Safer Neighbourhood’s Police Team – from 6 to 9 members.  This would be a significant achievement as currently every ward only has six Team members.  Councillor Convery believes that as our Ward has now developed such a good working relationship with our Team, that our Ward could be considered for a pilot project that could eventually be rolled out to other Wards following our example.

Naturally as with any initiative seeking expanded resources, this is an uphill battle and we must be able to demonstrate that the Ward residents not only support this initiative, but will continue to be active members of the panel that provides real direction to our Team.

We need your support for the initiative. Specifically, we encourage you to come to these meetings and to send emails encouraging the Met to consider Caledonian Ward for this unique initiative.

As government agencies are now developing their budgets for the coming year, time is of the essence and we want the Borough’s Police Commander to know that the residents of the Caledonian Ward want to see this initiative put in place.  A short email showing your support for Councillor Paul Convery’s initiative to expand our Safer Neighbourhoods Team would be very helpful.  His email address is paul.convery@islingtonlabour.org.uk

And please, try to come to our next meeting.  To be added to the Panel’s mailing list for future meeting notifications, please send an email to Jennifer Christie, the Panel’s secretary, at jennifer.christie@talk21.com. Should you also wish to be added to the King’s Cross Community Mailing List, please send an email to me, mentioning where in the ward that you live – stephan@yorkcentral.co.uk

Kings Cross local crime – in the C18th and C19th

The_bench London in the C18th and C19th was a rough and ready place with endemic crime and plenty of what we now call ASB.  Former neighbour Tom Steinberg has unearthed this wonderful website ‘The Proceedings of the Old Bailey’ where you can search for crimes by location pre 1843, the details of the trial all of which show up on a map.  Try searching for Maiden or Copenhagen or Collier (maiden Lane later became York Way, Copenhagen Street was recently laid out, Collier Street is still there in South Kings Cross)

The transcripts are amazing – with full cross examination of witnesses.  This servant stole some linen from her employer on Collier Street and was transported to Australia for seven years !

512. HARRIET YARDLEY was indicted for stealing, on the 21st of January, one shirt, value 5 s.; three tablecloths, value 8 s., and two handkerchiefs, value 5 s. , the goods of Robert Peters .

SARAH PETERS . I am the wife of Robert Peters , and am a laundress. We live at No. 20, Collier-street, Pentonville. These things were lost before the 21st of January. The prisoner has been employed by me for about twelve months.

GEORGE TAYLOR . I am a constable. I was sent for to Peters’s and took the prisoner. She said she knew nothing about it. I found some duplicates on her for two tablecloths. I took her to the pawnbroker’s, and found more property – she said she pawned them.

HENRY MACDONALD . I am shopman to Mr. Britton, a pawnbroker. I have a handkerchief pawned for 1 s. in the name of Smith, on the 3rd of October. The prisoner pawned always in that name.

RICHARD PIKE . I am a pawnbroker. I have a tablecloth pawned by the prisoner. I believe the duplicates found on her is mine.

SAMUEL LOVEDAY. I am a pawnbroker. I have a shawl, two table-cloths, and a handkerchief, which the prisoner pawned.
(Property produced and sworn to.)

GUILTY. Aged 37.
Transported for Seven Years First Middlesex Jury, before Mr. Recorder.

Noise pollution, Gifford and Pembroke Streets

Williams_yard_building_site_2 The wretched St WIlliam’s Yard development is going through an incredibly noisy phase of construction as the site is cleared and sheet piles are driven along the site boundary to enable the basement car park to be dug out.  The noise this Saturday morning was appalling – from before nine o’clock the most awful noise was being created that reverberated around this densely populated residential area.  I shot a video to get the noise across which should play if you click the window below (remember to turn your speakers on).  If that doesn’t work for you click here.

MONDAY UPDATE – Cllr Paul Convery is on the case and has mailed the Council officials and the construction company as in the attached document. There is some handy information in there about vibration in construction  Download st_williams_yard_convery_mails_re_vibration.doc

Street tipping North Kings Cross

Fridge_rufford_street Tilloch_st_mattressA fridge has been tipped on Rufford Street opposite number 1 behing the blue containers and a mattress on TIlloch Street at the junction with Carnoustie Drive.  WIll report both.  Also Stuart Cottis has reported the missed recycling collection on Rufford Street – so the pavement is littered with trash (albeit green trash, if that makes anyone feel better)
