Fun activities for kids this Saturday

Mapper This just in from Alistar Murray, one of our local neighbours.

This Saturday September 8th there will be lots of fun activities going on for kids of all ages between 2.00-4.00pm in Edward Square. You can make a kite, join in with a drumming workshop, make something with clay or learn how to do acrobalancing. Each activity is just 50p!
Edward Square entrance is between Caledonian Rd. and Copenhagen Street, and if you have not visited before it’s a lovely community park which recently won a green flag award for excellence. The Square was saved as a green space by local activists, and with a poem specially written by Islington resident and Poet Laureate Andrew Motion sandblasted into the wall it’s well worth a visit anytime.

This fun activity day was organised by volunteers from the Friends of Edward Square (the FREDS), Copenhagen School and LB Islington Greenspace

Just click the pix for a map to find Edward Square.

New florist on Caledonian Road

Aflorum_caledonian_road_and_balfe_3Just opened for about a week now, you’ll find Aflorum on Caledonian Road just across the street from Tesco at Balfe Street.  A beautiful shop, and friendly owner will make this a place to stop by and visit.  I’ve already spotted several of our neighbours coming out of the shop.

Shirley P. from Ice Wharf had this to say, I dropped in and introduced myself to Wicket who is the Thai owner.  He commented that already a number of local folks had dropped in to see the store and to wish him well.  The shop has a very lovely feel to it.

For more information as to just what Wicket (Big Brother in Thai) can provide, please check out his website: www.aflorum.co.uk or give him a call at (020) 7837-4000.  This is a very welcome addition to our neighbourhood.

Composite_for_bulletin_board I recently met the owner of the King’s Cross Eye Clinic – at Gran Sasso – naturally.  His attractive new shop is located at 280 Pentonville Road between York Way and Caledonian Road and it’s really the kind of place every community needs as it sepecializes in eyecare…and more.

I’ve lifed the following from their website, it’s the best description of the services that they provide:

We particularly specialise in eye examinations, all types of contact lenses for all age groups, dyslexia eye tests, advice for those who are partially sighted and high quality fashionable eyewear. With over 30 new designer collections, and several exclusive collections our practice is a leading fashion centre.

In addition there are several other services on offer: Physio Medicine – Physiotherapy clinic with sports massage, acupuncture and specialist services. Sessional clinics: Clinical Psychologist, Dietician, Audiologist, Podiatrist, Speech Therapist.

To introduce themselves to the community they’ve offered a £50 voucher that can be downloaded here. Download 50_voucher_for_kings_cross_eye_clinic.pdf.  If you visit them ask for the owner Jonathan Cohen and tell him Stephan sent you!!!!  For more info, go to their website – www.kcec.co.uk

Kings Cross big tent….

TentAn enormous temporary building has appeared over the last week at the North end of the railway lands behind Kings Cross.  Yesterday a huge pavilion roof was hoisted up by six cranes, the walls will probably go in today.  Enquiries with Argent revealed it isn’t one of their’s.  It is probably for the Arrivals festival in November – a big arts and culture bash to welcome the Eurostar – for which an embryonic website has just gone live.

UPDATE 7 September

The tent is up and it is huge, absolutely colossal temporary structure – click on photo to enlarge

Nido Pentonville Road – 1,000 residents coming soon…..

NidoNido are about to bring over 1,000 people to live in Kings Cross in a refit of the old tower blocks at 200 Pentonville Road and Calshot Street.  This will probably be the biggest ever single influx of people to Kings Cross.  These people, largely foreign students will all be very welcome.  The new student accommodation is 860 units of ‘cubicle’ living with some affordable rented housing at the top.  The cubicles are tiny less than 12 foot by 12 foot including ‘bathroom’ and you pay £140 a week for a small one or £120 a week to share a very slightly bigger one at 184 square foot.  The concept is an interesting one – refurbishing office buildings in run down areas as residential accomodation – it has worked well to regenerate some cities in America and is unusual in the UK.  Blackstone the developers own the Savoy and Centre Parcs.

After having cut down the nice trees on Pentonville Road it would be good if Nido somehow or other engaged with the community – let’s see what happens when it is up and running.  People are due to move in in September.  But it all looks very unfinished (pics here), with cranes everywhere, the pedestal part of the building with a lot of work to do and some windows still boarded up on the towers.  Workmen on the site shrug diplomatically when you ask them when it will be finished.  The marketing is targetted hard at overseas students and linked to from London Met – let’s hope it’s ready, especially given how confusing it is for people moving to a foreign country for the first time. There is an embryonic Nido Facebook Group here and some entertaining PR here and here but nothing can really surpass Nido’s own blurb…..

‘Nido is the newest way of living student life in London; we call it “Nidology”. A stylish home in the heart of the capital, purpose built with the latest bits of technology, and loads of hassle-free extras. A community of 1045 students, each living their own way.’

‘Joining Nido is also about being one of the 1045 young locals. It’s up to you all to make life what you want it to be – transform the Communal Area together, get everyone out on a trip, or just screen a favourite movie. And if you’re ever at a loss for what to do, the Resident Assistants will be keeping you in touch with local events, as well as organising their own activities.’

Kings Cross TV goes on air

KingscrosstvEveryone seems to be making video clips on their mobile phones and cameras these days – so I have pulled about 30 Kings Cross internet videos together at a new site KingsCrossTV.  There is a huge range of stuff from 1950s steam train nostalgia, to Sufi dancers, to local campaigns to people messing about on the station forecourt.

You can look some of the best films in KXTV1 here, or choose a category on the site itself.

I’d love to have your Kings Cross films please click here to send one in.
