St Pancras – second impressions

St_pancras_people St Pancras is stunning – no doubt about it.  But I thought it worth recording some second impressions now i have walked through it a few times and tried some of the shops.  How does it work as a building on a human scale?

impressions:

cold, very cold, bloody freezing.  I am generously insulated by nature, but it really is cold in there.  They are right to heat the seats in the Champagne bar.  They should provide reindeer skins parkas and huskies on entrance.

busy and rather crowded.  It is surprisingly busy during the day at the weekend – the huge space actually feels quite crowded – not as bad as Victoria or Waterloo but it doesn’t feel like there is much room for the future.  The pedestrian flows don’t work at all – too many pinchpoints and corners to turn with large crowds of people.  But can’t be certain how this will turn out until all the undergound ticket halls etc are open.

unfinished.  Lots of not finished shops and stuff.  If you watched the documentary you will know they had to prioritise the travelators over the retail.  Quite a bit of improvising over unfinished bits.  The shops are slowly coming, but the current ones are a bit busy.  There is no market yet.  But there is the world’s least busy M&S with a billynomates of a location at the far end under the train platform next to Thameslink.  Great selection too if you like M&S food

great chocolate – the Neuhaus choclatier is some of the best I have ever bought, ever.  Worth £800m to get this within ten minutes of my front door.

great baker – Peyton and Byrne have now opened – really really good artisan baked stuf, albeit refreshingly expensive.  Try the sausage roll.

statues mixed – the Betjeman one is great, the kiss/meeting place is a monstrosity.  We should back the Flying Scotsman into the station, attach a chain, stoke the boiler and pull the daft smooching couple down like the Saddam statue in Baghdad, but with steam power.

little signage – the designers deliberately suppressed the OTT signage of most stations – it makes a huge difference – your eyes are drawn to the amazing space, not the un-necessary signs cautioning you not to bring wildebeest into the station nor to leave your yak unattended.

hideous advent calendar – allegedly world’s largest but is a poorly disguised billboard which spoils the view of the clock.  With any luck will be gone by 12th night and won’t be replaced by a Hello magazine billboard.

nice try at activities for kids – they are trying with a Santa post box (letters, remember them) people in costume, Santa’s grotto etc

loads of apparent tourists – people with cameras everywhere.  It might be more popular than Madame Taussauds.

If you haven’t been in, then shame on you – go and have a look and do some retail therapy.

Abandoned car – Rufford Street

Fiat_rufford_streetThanks to Stuart Cottis for being a good neighbour and reporting this sorry car to Contact Islington:

‘The car had its passenger side and rear windows smashed a couple of months ago at which point the owner did not organise for re-glazing but rather patched up with black plastic sheeting. The car then appears to have been abandoned as it has not moved for three months or so. It has now had the bonnet (and other items) removed and wires etc. are protruding into the street.’

‘I would be grateful if the vehicle could be removed as soon as possible as it will become a honeypot for crime and anti-social behaviour. I am going to forward this email to the Metropolitan Police too.’

Mercifully the problem isn’t as bad as it used to be on Rufford Street – back in 2002 a breakdown and rescue driver used to run a racket where he would take a wreck off your hands for £50 and dump it on Rufford Street late at night.  Some weeks we would get up to a dozen.  Had to resort to the old tactic of ringing up the Chief Executive of the company and screaming at him.

Kings Cross housing market – further news

Hamptons Some more news on the prospects for the Kings Cross market – maintains the relatively upbeat tone of James Byford’s exclusive piece for this site.  Hamptons International, they say:

‘North London will outperform South London by 1 per cent (4 per cent versus 3 per cent), while other areas will rise by a relatively modest 2.5 per cent….Paddington, Bayswater, Kings Cross and Islington are likely to see the greatest capital appreciation in 2008, given the continuing regeneration of Paddington Waterside and the Kings Cross area.’

So good for owners, not so good for those looking to find housing locally.

Progress one brick at a time…

Caledonian_road_feredo_bridge_bef_5 Sometime getting a wall erected can take some time, but in the end a problem is solved.. Here is some good news…

Dear All,

Please see attached before and after photographs of the problem area at the Caledonian Road Feredo bridge. I would also like to apologise for the delay in erecting this wall, their was quite a few problems that our Highways team had to overcome before the wall went up including land ownership, BT cables beneath, change of contractors just to name a few. Thank you all for your patience.Caledonian_road_feredo_bridge_after

Thank you Owen and Peter for all your help, the wall looks great. Also thank you Ray, Len and Rick for continually arranging/clearing the dumps from the location and Leon for the placing the anti-graffiti coat on the new wall.

Regards,

Our local representatives online

Town_hall Our local MP Emily Thornberry sent me an email with a link to her new website.  It has a section on Caledonian and Barnsbury wards.  You can get in touch with her here.  Hopefully the website will be updated regularly and not just remain static.

Other useful local contacts include local Councillors (click here) it is best to contact them first if you have a problem with something very local – if the MP can help they will refer you on.  If you aren’t sure what ward you are in but know your post code use the excellent service at www.writetothem.com that will help you get a message for free to each of your elected representatives.

In the interests of balance, here is the website of Bridget Fox, who is the LibDem potential parliamentary candidate who will take on Emily Thornberry at the next election.  Bridget Fox also has a good blog here.  And here is the Islington Conservatives website.

Although I often have trouble working out what the London Assembly does, our member Jeanette Arnold has a strong public service record and is on the Metropolitan Police Authority.  You can find out about what she does and contact her here.

This website is happy to work with any political group (except extremists) to get things done in the community.

Woodpeckers in the heart of Kings Cross

Woodpecker1Val and Tony Rees sent me this wonderful sight of a Greater Spotted Woodpecker in their garden on the Cally Road in November (click pic to make it bigger).  It’s great to see birds like this in the Kings Cross gyratory.  Up here in Bingfield Park things are pretty spartan – i get about 20 crows every morning, the occasional Great Tit and Chaffinch and a pair of Pied Wagtails.  Had a woodpecker once a couple of years ago but he never came back.

£2million ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ heist hits Kings Cross

Oceans_eleven A gang dressed as policemen apparently conned their way into a Kings Cross business and got away with up to £2m of IT gear and possibly some data, according to reports.  The police said that on Thursday night at about 2100 the robbers/fake police told staff at the data centre on St Pancras Way that they wanted to check something up on the roof.  Then handcuffed everyone and made off with a load of IT kit.  Real police arrived at 2200, staff were shaken but not hurt.

If you saw anything suspicious in the St Pancras Way area on 6 December at 2100 call CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111

Kings Cross is very close to the City and ideally located for all sorts of odd businesses.  One of these is IT data warehousing.  An anonymous building at 2-6 St Pancras Way (in the one-way system opposite the post sorting centre, next to the canal) hosts a load of IT kit for Verizon Business a global telecoms and IT company.  Banks and big companies let Verizon look after all their IT kit – reports suggest that JP Morgan was one of the customers of this data centre.

The Verizon website boasts of its security at its data centres:

‘• 24×7 uniformed guard service with interior and exterior closed-circuit television surveillance
• Electronic access at all data centre entrances, including biometric hand scanners
• Electronic key management systems and individually keyed racks’

Apparently checking police ID wasn’t part of the security measures…….
