Thames Walk to the Source – Stage Twenty Seven (Lechlade to Cricklade)

Walk_1Its almost a year since Tobias Newland began walking up the Thames from Woolwich on 23rd September 2007. Twenty-six amazing walks have seen Tobias and other King’s Cross based walkers reach Lechlade in Gloucestershire on the southern edge of the Cotswolds which is the limit of navigation on the Thames for most boats. Tobias writes:

Thanks to the twenty or so people who have come on the walks so far I hope some of you can join us on the final three walks.

But now its time to go further upstream to find the source. On Saturday 20th September (next Saturday) we will be walking about ten miles upstream along the infant Thames to Cricklade in northern Wiltshire. Please contact me by email so that we can arrange meetings and and (possibly) ticket discounts.Walk_2

You can see more than 200 photos and films from the walk so far on Tobias’ blog.

Start time: 11.10am Lechlade, Gloucestershire

Eat organic in Kings Cross – Acorn House special taster menu

Soil_association We are in the middle of the Soil Association’s Organic Fortnight, which runs until 21st September – or so says their PR guff – there is something interesting happening in Kings Cross.  The superb Acorn House on Swinton Street is putting on a special menu:

‘As part of the fortnight, award-winning Waterhouse and Acorn House eco-friendly restaurants (in Shoreditch and Kings Cross respectively) are holding exclusive organic taster menus..On 15th September the multi award-winning Acorn House will feature a special five-course organic taster menu including soup, antipasti, main and dessert, matched with three selected organic and bio-dynamic wines.’

Acorn House has never failed to delight me, so get in if you can.

Lincoln Lounge says business not community is the priority

Lincoln
I admit everything. I went into the Lincoln, my second fav local bar, to ask if they’d put up a poster for the campaign to Open Up King’s Cross Station. I knocked over a load of straws and stuff that had been on the bar. It was an accident and I apologised profusely. I wasn’t prepared for what happened next.

The guy behind the bar, who may have been the owner – I don’t know – said he did not support the campaign because he wants a higher footfall going past the Lincoln. I asked if he really meant he didn’t support the local community and he said, no indeed he did not support the community. He wants the Wharfdale Rd entrance closed because he thinks it will increase his business. He feels that people walking up to King’s Place along York Way will increase his business. I tried to explain that will not happen. When the development is complete the obvious route to King’s Place from the station will be along Goodsway. He did not agree.

He wasn’t a happy bunny. I came away quite shaken by the exchange. It’s unusual for a local business to say they are not interested in the local community. I was shocked. There you go. What more can I say. The Lincoln Lounge want to prioritise future potential but far from guaranteed passing trade over us locals…. Draw your own conclusions from that.

62-62 York Way Latest Planning Application Refused

ROUND 1 – Decision to the CommunityRefused_3

Just to make it clear, by refusing this latest application the community actually came one step closer to getting a building constructed on this site!  An approved application would have given the developer three more years to do nothing and, as past experience (their history of submitting repeated planning application for this site), has shown, this would have been the most likely outcome.

Instead the Planning Committee, let by our local Councillor Paul Convery effectively told the developers to show the neighbourhood something more interesting, less bulky or get on an build that which you have permission for – the 2002 approved plan.

ROUND 2 – Decision "To be determined"

The developer, still not happy with this latest decision, has one more bite at his oversize apple – the Planning Inquiry that will decide the fate of his 2007 Plan that was refused by the Council back in Nov. 2007.  It was for an even larger building, so this is an even more critical decision that the community must win.  It is clear that this developer will use every means possible to maintain overall control of this site and will try to wear down the Council and the public so they can build the biggest building possible.  Please keep in mind that this developer has had approved plans for this site since 1995 and to date we only have a hole in the ground.  Along the way, we defeated a 999-bed youth hostel, an illegal telephone mast, and got the illegal advertising hoardings (and the subsequent graffiti boards) that blighted the area removed.

Now the next test awaits, so please stand up and be counted.  If you don’t, someone else with dictate the fate our our neighbourhood!  The Public Inquiry will take place at the on Wednesday the 17th of September at the Holiday Inn at Camden Lock, 30 Jamestown Road, Camden Town, London NW1 7BR. Download map.pdf    The inquiry will commence at 10 AM and could last several days.  Members of the public are encouraged to attend and make their feelings known.  If you are interested in speaking in support of the Council’s Refusal of this plan, would you please get in touch with stephan@kingscrossenvironment.com.

Network Rail = Nearly Roadkill – Network Rail plays Frogger for real on York Way

Network_rail_nearly_roadkillNetwork Rail’s contractors have dug a huge hole in the road and pavement at the South end of York Way and made no provision for pedestrians.  To get to the heavily used bus stops you have to walk out into the road – there is no crossing!

This is idiotic – like a scene from a Laurel and Hardy film.  Or perhaps the classic computer game Frogger – where you have to dash between the trucks and cars to avoid a nasty death.

There isn’t even a sign on the South  side telling you what to do.  On the North side there is a paltry ‘use other pavement’ sign but no suggestions of how – which suggests you get off the bus, walk 300m up a narrow pavement under an intimidating hoarding.  Cross at a set of lights walk back 300m, cross the road again to get back to where you started – all with a pushchair or shopping etc.   Or step boldly out into the Kings Cross gyratory.

It’s terrifying that these Network Rail muppets are in charge of a railway if they can’t even run some roadworks.

UPDATE – Sunday 1400 – Alastair Metcalfe of Network Rail has been in touch – he has been down to the site and told the contractors this is unacceptable, let’s hope it improves

Con-artist scam and attempted burglary at York Central

Local_con_artist_4 How would you respond to this, if someone came to your door?

I’m staying upstairs at x’s flat and we’ve just had a delivery.  The driver will not take my credit card, and I have no cash.  Could you please loan me £7 to pay the driver?

That’s the pitch to look out for.  Unfortunately for several of York Central’s well meaning neighbours – they realised the con too late.  And things got even worse from there…

While wandering around the building the bold intruder entered an open door to one of the flats and tried to make off with a laptop computer.  Spotted a chase ensued and the laptop was recovered but was severely damaged.

Do you know the person pictured? (Click the image for a larger version.)  He’s the intruder.  And he’s not a very smart one as he left some of his possessions behind that should help the police trace him.  However, If you do know who he is, please get in touch with stephan@kingscrossenvironment.com

Could anyone reading this please circulate info about this scam to their neighbours, and take a lesson from ME, even in what you think is a secure building, make sure your door is locked at all times!

Free money for local community projects or groups

Treasure Local groups are often short of money – well Councillor Paul Convery tells me that he and his colleagues are offering free money from the Council.  This local community chest money is really handy if your group needs just a few hundred quid for something but you can’t navigate complicated grants processes.  The background to the fund and rationale behind setting the community chest up is here.  Blurb begins:

‘The Council’s West Area committee has established a fund of £64,000 to support small voluntary and community groups in the Caledonian, Holloway, Barnsbury and St Mary wards. The West Area Community Chest will give grants of up to £3,000 for projects that will achive any or all of the following:

– improve the physical environment
– improve local residents’ health and safety
– raise educational achievement outside school
– improve skills and help local residents find work
–  contribute to renewal and regeneration

Applications must be received by 30th September.

Click here to go to the official application details where you will find a form and guidance notes etc.
