Market Estate art event 6th March

Market estateLocal resident Molly Rigg has sent in details of this interesting local art project in the Market Estate just north of Market Road.  Molly's text begins:

>>Are you interested in getting involved with an extremely exciting art event, made up of 75 artists, 66 site-specific projects, 20 vacant flats, and one soon to be demolished 1960’s housing estate?

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist with the running of the event on Saturday 6th March.

The Market Estate Project offers the opportunity to meet and network with a huge range of artists, designers, creatives and community residents. Providing valuable experience of working at a large dynamic art event in an important moment in the regeneration of the Market Estate, Islington.

Hours will be from 1–10pm but please do still get in contact if you are interested but unable to work for the whole duration. In exchange for giving your time and energy you will be deliciously fed, watered and given excellent recommendations for any future projects.

We have various roles we need to fill, from invigilation, front of house and ticketing so please specify if there is anything you are particularly interested in. Please see the links below for further information.

We would love to hear from you and need your support to make this challenging project a huge success.
Thank you,

The Market Estate Project Team

Eat pancakes for local children’s charity CYP on Pancake Day

Cyp pancake benefitIf you are looking for an excuse to scoff some panckaes on Tuesday then head down Grays Inn road to La Scampa on Theobalds Road – for every pancake you eat 50 pence will be donated to CYP.

CYP is a vital force in guiding young people in the Caledonian Road area.  They reach out to large numbers of young people and give them constructive things to do in the sometimes bleak Kings Cross environment.

In the last financial year (2008-2009) CYP:

• worked with 476 individual young people
• in 4,706 attendances
• over 340 sessions
• Age range: 6- 21 years old

If you want to donate in a fat-free, safe and secure way with no commission through the co-opbank click on the donate now image below or click here.  I was delighted to see recently that Thornhill Square Residents Association has donated £2,000 to CYP.

Safer Neighbourhoods Policing

20090616135258_52263ebbd653_000367

All too often resident's feel that the Police are nowhere to be seen and are hiding in their cushy offices drinking tea.  Well that's not exactly right and as the following piece tries to illustrate, they are really out and about our borough.  Yes, this piece was provided by the Met, but I know our Safer Neighbourhood's Team and have seen them trudging around on the coldest and dreariest of days!

Islington Safer Neighbourhoods Officers Walk The Extra Mile In Their Community

One police officer and two Police Community Support Officers have taken part in a pedometer challenge to see how many footsteps they take serving the Islington community during the course of one working day. In total they took 46,752 steps in one eight-hour shift.

This was done as part of a new Metropolitan Police Service campaign "Walking is Working" which aims to highlight how important it is for Safer Neighbourhoods teams to engage and be visible and approachable in the local community,

The Metropolitan Police Service Policing Pledge stipulates that Safer Neighbourhoods Teams should spend at least 80 per cent of their time working and engaging with the local community. Our 16 Safer Neighbourhoods teams have exceeded this commitment. Assisting them are the North and South Islington Problem Solving team, the Safer Neighbourhoods Task Force- set up to tackle crimininal and illegal drugs activity and the Angel team targeting crime in the N1 area around the shops.

20100209152001_9377768debba_000430 PCSO Vicki Burns from the Clerkenwell Safer Neighbourhoods team said: " My typical day involves liaising with housing offices, estate managers, hostel managers and shopkeepers. I speak daily to residents on the ward about any issues or concerns they might have. I also engage with the local youths, I know where they are coming from because I am 19 years old. To help break down barriers between the young people and police, we have begun a local youth drop-in surgery, which is held once a week.

"It may sound like I'm reading a script but everyone plays a key role in having a safer neighbourhood. It's really important to be visible and approachable in the community and patrolling on foot makes this possible."

This year, Hillrise and Holloway Safer Neighbourhoods Teams have obtained two dispersal orders in the Elthorne Park and Market Place areas,in direct response to complaints from the community about anti-social behaviour. St George's and Caledonian SNTs have joined forces with Islington Council to clean up Islington as part of the 'Cleaner,Safer Islington' campaign, and responding to an increase in cycle thefts, Barnsbury SNT recently held a free bike tagging event for cyclists living and working in Islington. These are just a few of the numerous examples of Safer Neighbourhoods teams listening and responding to the needs of the community.

And rember, local residents CAN have their say – come to the next Safer Neighbourhoods Panel.  To get on the mailing list, please email its secretary Jennifer C. for time/place of the next meeting.

NEW CPR METHOD, NO MOUTH TO MOUTH AND IT IS CLAIMED TO WORK BETTER

Default This was passed along to me from a friend in the States.  It apparently is a new method of CPR – cardio puliminary resussation.  This is not a joke, and seemed to be something worth spreading around.  Take a look at the video showing the new techinque on YouTube.

If you are a medical professional, we would welcome any comments you have about this new procedure.

Bollards to you

P1030161Way back in 2006 there was a persistent problem with fly tipping of builders waste and large items such as mattresses on Tilloch Street – a remnant of the old grid system in the so-called 'Bemerton slum' which was cleared in the 1960s/70s to make the Bemerton Estate.  With the support of Paul Convery and others we got the old bollards restored – they had been vandalised, we suspected by local businesses.  This website has been running long enough now to have this sort of local history. Now i see that the central bollard has been cast aside and possibly damaged – it isn't clear whether anyone will put it back – might be worth the council having a look at what is going on.

It’s the dregs – Regents Canal gives up its rubbish

Bike dregsA tiny section of Regents Canal was dragged yesterday – we think by Thames 21 – and it has turned up all sorts of garbage.  Motorbikes, bicycles, shopping trolleys, traffic cones.  All from a section barely 30 metres long from the Maiden Lane Bridge to the end of Kings Place.

Their catch was clearly more than they could carry home.  But leaving it on the side of the canal was perhaps a bit shortsighted – a fair proportion may well end up back in the water unless removed quickly.
