Great freeze of 2010 hits Regent’s Canal

Man on canal Local photographer Yolande Rabet caught these images from her viewpoint looking north over Battlebridge Basin on the Regents' Canal today. This man was being closely watched at all times by a friend of his on a nearby boat – do not be tempted to copy him, the Canal is definately not safe to walk on – if you fall in, if the cold doesn't get you the Weils Disease will! These fantastic photos show where the big freeze ends and the running water begins again on the canal. Many thanks to Yolande for sharing her photos.Man on canal 3Ma frozen canal 2010

That is just about the stupidest thing I have seen. On Friday afternoon with the temperature well below zero I walked around the basin from Kings Place and reckoned that the ice was about 2cms thick (aka about an inch). In Scotland, for activities like curling and ice skating on deep water there has to be about 15cms thickness before it’s considered safe. So I’m surprised and relieved that this guy did not end up dead.
