There was a good turn out this evening to see Councillors turn down unanimously the mistaken proposal for an inappropriate building at the corner of York Way and Wharfdale Road. We have covered this long saga here and here and here. This is a real victory for local people who have worked diligently at a campaign. The Councillors took a good discussion and came up with reasonable grounds to reject it. Well done everyone.

A very strange twist to the saga occurred earlier this week. The “extant” permission given in 2002 was due to run out yesterday! So a mechanical digger moved on site and “commenced development” by digging a nominal ditch of foundations. The developer also triggered a payment of (I think) £150,000 to the Council by way of S106 payment which was required “on commencement”. I would be amazed to see much more work on site … whilst the developer figures out whether to appeal the West Area Planning Subcommittee’s decision.
